Although their output has been questionable lately, I still rank REM up there with the great bands of my era. The stuff in my college days was genius (Fables of the Reconstruction, Document, Reckoning, Life’s Rich Pageant). Last really great one was Out of Time.

"Last really great one was Out of Time. "

Agreed. Last REM album I bought.

One of our secretarys here, who has an unbelievable music collection, said REM hasn’t been good since you could understand what Stipe was saying…

if that means pre 1996 I would agree with her

I remember hearing this joke back in the late 80s when they started getting mainstream radio play.

and they got a lot, it’s funny I remember being at a show on the Monster tour and Stipe was prophesying that this was the beginning of the end for the band, at the time I thought he was crazy cause their popularity was exploding, looking back I think he knew that the same popularity would be their undoing.

They lost me at “Document”
.

Saw them in '86 on the Life’s Rich Pageant tour, great show. They lost me after Out of Time though.

that was a great show. One of my first concerts ever and one of my favorite.

Not one of my first concerts, but definitely memorable. Taught my guitar teacher (20 years my junior) “Superman” today. Damn, I’m getting old.

One of those bands I just couldn’t get into. Like Dave Mathews. I want to like them, I think I should like them, but they are just boring to me.

Yup, that’s when they lost me as well.

Over/under on the reunion tour: 4 years.

I’m going with under.

All of you can kiss my flat hairless ass. MY BAND is braking up and all you morons are sounding like a bunch of frat bros , “Dude! Like I can’t grow with a band. I am a musical idiot and have to be spoon fed the same stuff or I bail.”

R.E.M. will be with me forever and the simple fact no one has mentioned Monster or Dead Letter Office makes it easy for me to say, “Suck it. Suck it long and hard.”

Bunch of tools.

I will now be heart broken for a while as y’all dance on my grave.

Did the press release say “R.E.M has decided to retire at the end of 1991”?

I kid, I kid.

Kick a nigga when he’s down. Nice.

You sound like a teenage girl, “Gee, like, I’m in love with this band and will love them even if their music starts to suck, because I’m a musical moron and need to be fed the same band over and over even if their music is crap and other bands start to do it better than them.”
.

No, I sound like a complete assholey music snob that cares deeply about unimportant stuff because that is what I am. To me rock matters. You have your God and Country and I have Rock-N-Roll. The simple idea that you can stop liking a band because they changed their sound and never giving the new sound a good try is foreign to me. Am I being ridiculous? Absolutely, but in the words of the great great Peter Townshend, “Rock-N-Roll is very very ridiculous and very very important.”

Their best album was automatic for the people…I’m a huge REM fan. Being from Georgia and having spent a lot of time in Athens I’m sad to see them hang it up…

Not for nothing, but I gave the newer REM stuff plenty of a good try, hoping it would be good. It wasn’t. Same reason I mostly stopped listening to Aerosmith and U2.
