Quiz of the evening: Shimano 7900 front derailleur compatibility

When I setup my road bike with 7900 I learned that the 7900 is mostly backward compatible with the exception of the front derailleur, which has a different pull and must be paired with the 7900 shifters.

So for tri bikes this leads to questions:

  1. Does that I can get 7900 bar end shifters and use my 7900 FD on my tri bike? Even with a non-Shimano crankset? Or should I scrap the 7900 FD entirely if I’m not using a 7900 crank?

  2. How do people use the 7900 bar end shifters with non-7900 FD if the pull is different? (I’ve seen reports of this) Did the introduction of the 7900 pull difference mean that if you’re not running the 7900 FD you must use 6700 (or 7800) bar end shifters? (Previously Shimano made only one version of bar end shifters and they were DA)

I’ll call shimano tomorrow if I don’t get an answer… but come on slowtwitch. Don’t disappoint!

With bar end shifters you can use whatever front derailleur you’d like. The cable pull ratios built into brifters doesn’t come into play when you’re using a friction shifter. You’ll have plenty of extra cable pull capacity with a bar end shifter as they’re designed to work with doubles or triples.

you’ve already got your answer, but what crankset/rings are you using? the 7900 chainrings are one of the best things about 7900 (in my opinion). the front shifting is dreamy.

I’d love to use my existing 7900 crank to save money and get dreamy shifting, but

a) I want shorter cranks so I can’t use it,

b) It’s for a P5 so if I’m buying new I might as well get something BBright native… and you don’t do much front shifting in a tri (if at all) so I figure aero probably trumps shift dreaminess.

gotcha. i got 167.5’s for my wife in da7900, so they’re available. you can also just buy arms if you want.

yes, front shifting matters less if you are not shifting rings. nevertheless, i do shift in some TTs and training rides.

what crankset will you get that is more aero?

i agree about getting a native bbright crankset. i use bb30 frames and prefer bb30 cranks over using a solution with an adapter (not that that is bad, it’s just that there’s no way another interface can IMPROVE things), otherwise i’d use da cranks. as it is, i bolt on DA78xx or 79xx rings onto any crankset i use.

Hmmm, wait… I can do that?

Edit: yes, it creates a “frankenring” haha.

ah, you didn’t say you had a quarq.

yes, there is no problem with 7900 rings on the quarqs (130bcd). i have two sets of that. i’ve got a picture kicking around somewhere on here with my shiv, quarq + da7900 rings.

No no… no quarq. Just a picture of the 7900 rings on another crank. Is it less retarded looking without the quarq?

i actually don’t think it looks retarded – but that’s a personal opinion. i thought it would look bad, but i think it looks kind of slick. anyway, the shifting on the 7900 rings is that good that i wouldn’t care how bad it looked.

I run a 7900 front der. My bar end DA shifters are 5 or more years old. No issues what so ever.
