Quickest Local Age Groups

Expanding on the IMC thread, what age groups are the fastest in your local races?

It was mentioned that the 40-44m are fast because the kids are a little older and the income a bit higher. And, 25-34 burners are racing pro, but that can’t account for that many people.

In my area, it is primarily the 30-34 (my age group) that cream the field. I don’t know their family situation, but it isn’t even close. My wife will ask how I did and the typical response is “15th overall, 12th in AG.”

My guess is that kids are biggest factor. My two girls can force me to cancel a workout by looking at me a certain way, and I wouldn’t change that for anything. I don’t think many of the top 30-34 guys locally have kids. Though…one guy who always beats me just had his first. Moving on up!

Congrats again to the IMC finishers.

i think it flipflops from 35 to 50 around here, It is a crapshoot sometimes. You just never know who is going to show-up.

35-44 with a very fast 50-54 and a few younger ones.

We’ve got some old locals here who keep winning races. I think Bryan is like 50 and Dan as well.

25 to 45 are all up there.

North Texas here. There are a lot of Semi-Pros in our area, and they’re liable to show up at any of the local races and blow our doors off. Even if they don’t, it’s generally somebody in the 28-35 range. There are some super fast guys in the 40+ groups though, and you can never count them out.

Just once, though, I’d like to have a race that had a T3 to a double elimination round of 3 point hand-to-hand. Maybe I’d have a chance to place higher. Giant legs, but tiny arms? You’re dead meat. Blew it all on the run? Just go ahead & DNF, or you’re DOA. Sucked down 3 quarts of Gatorade? Wanna see a replay, in reverse? Scrawny little 120lb’er? Let me help you into your shoes…ALL of you.

sigh

and I am waiting for a T3 that transitions to a SQL query optimization contest, total run time of your query on a 10 terabyte database added to your time

Nice. The smart racers would run & code in parallel. With nun-chucks. I bet Chuck Norris could do it.

Awesome.

its not all about smarts. its about training too!

Longer races, bigger fields = M35-39yrs hands down. Usually stacked with ex pros who’ve moved on in life, current or ex pros in other sports dabbling in tri (runners, cyclists, rowers, etc), or amateurs who’ve been in the game a long time (10+ years)…if you looked at the results of WTC IM & 70.3 events across the world you’ll find the M35-39 “pointy end” is typically faster & deeper than others. Here’s an old post on the subject. Of course there are exceptions to every rule…

Shorter races, smaller fields = M<20yrs. This might surprise North Americans but down here (NZ) triathlon & related sports (cycling, xc, multisport variants, etc) are hugely popular at the high school level. My first tri was an oly won by a 15yr old (in 1:55 IIRC). These little fuckers are all heart & lungs, no bodyfat/mass, race every week, draft each others asses off…and are a dime a dozen on my local scene.

I agree with show pony. Bigger races, 35-39 is the hyper competitive AG. Sprints, maybe younger. Plenty of fast guys 40-50, but fading fast.

one fun thing I notice is at a lot of races there will be some random 50+ year old just CRUSHING the bike course. Like 1 or 2 mph above everyone else.

WHO ARE YOU OLD MAN?!
