Quickee Race Report: Bikesport X-Terra Torn Shirt Tri/Du

We helped put together the Nissan X-Terra Bikesport Torn-Shirt off Road Triathlon and Duathlon today. We were titile sponsors of the event and helped with neutral support, boat support on the swim and in the transition area.

All in all, a fun race on a beautiful day at Brighton State Recreation Area.

Warm water, 79 degrees, so no wetsuits today as has been the case with the recent heat here in Michigan. 97 degrees here yesterday. Much milder and more pleasant today.

Thunder storms threatened briefly at the start but blew over. We consulted with the National Weather Service local and regional offices for weather advisory. Joyce Donaldson, USAT official, race director and USAT Technical Commitee member was very dilligent in researching the weather right up until we put swimmers in the water. She had the phone to one ear and radio to the other monitoring the weather situtation. To Joyce’s credit, the race went off safely right on time with no weather delay and conditions improved by the minute throughout the event.

Pete Bolen, a great local guy and super athlete was 2nd, Ryan DeCook, rising X-Terra star, was third. For the life of me I did not recognize the winner- I apologize guys. It was an early morning. The women’s race was actually closer and more interesting than the men’s. I’ll post a results link when it is available.

The mountain bike protion of the off-road tri/du was very difficult and technical. About 40% of the field took a minor tumble at some point of the bike judging from the looks of things. This was also our USAT Regional Off-Road Triathlon Championship.

Our friends from Energ-Ice were there with the Energi-Ice Cool Zone at the finish line handing out those new electrolyte popsicles. I like those things and they were the perfect thing on a hot day.

Nice event, big fun, and a good day at the races.

That sounds a great race, Tom, any pictures? I have always fancied doing an Xterra race and am aiming for the one in Port Moody, BC mid September. Unfortunately, this year it’s not Xterra but is the same course and organisers so I am up for it.

How far is Brighton State Recf rom Dearborn? I like the sound of the Electrolyte popsicles, a fun way to rehydrate.
