Bit of a newbie question, but here goes. I have just fitted a new tub (got my first puncture on my racing bike) with tape, it is all on fine and sitting true. How long does it need before I can ride it? Can I do my club 10 miler tonight or does it need to ‘go off’ at all?
My experience with Tufo’s Extreme tubular glue tape in concert with a Tufo tubulars on carbon tubular rims was that once you remove the last paper layer from the adhesive and pump up the tire, there is not really a setup time unless you followed the advice to wet the base tape on the tire in which case the overnight period should have been sufficient. I have not tried the tape on alloy tubulars so I can not offer any advice there but I will add that I tried to use the Tufo tape with a Veloflex tubular and even after inflating to 125 (~9 bar) and letting the wheels ‘set up’ for a few days, I did not feel confident in the bond between carbon wheel and Veloflex tubular and have since removed the tubular and I am in the process of removing residual tape (argh)! For those who use the tape, it seems that the key to painless removal so as not to leave large patches of the stuff, requires slow, deliberate (much patience involved) pressure to peel back the glue tape residue after removing the tire.
Sorry - never used tape. Why bother when gluing is so easy? With glue, if it’s a flat course without a lot of turns and it’s a rear wheel, I’d ride a well glued tyre more or less immediately. For anything requiring a lot of turns, descending, or a front wheel, I’d let the glue set for 24hrs. I also pump the shit out of the tyre to help the glue set. No idea if it really helps, but I do it.
