Just finished re-installing my casette after putting on a rear wheel cover. Everything runs fine until i stop pedaling at which point the chan loses tension because the cogs continue rolling forward even though i’m not applying force on the cranks.
Is this because i tightened the locking ring too much/little on the casette or is this my rear wheel cover sticking to my largest cog? any ideas for a fix?
Has to be the cover rubbing cassette – but why don’t you look and see? Spin the cassette and see if it rubs.
If so, what to do about it? I have not messed with wheel covers so I won’t begin to speculate about how you need to install it. One thing to consider: is your bike a ten speed? If so, when you changed the cassette did you misplace the thin spacer/washer that goes behind the cassette?
I usually tighten the cassette first, so you can make sure the cover is centered and not being pinched by the cassette or the spacer. The cover should spin pretty freely at this point when holding the wheel.
I took the casette off again and noticed that the cover was in fact rubbing not against the casette, but against the casette body. after loosening all the screws i found that it was impossible to center the cover in such a way that all the screws were in place and the cover wasn’t rubbing.
Ended up just taking an exacto knife and widening the cog side hole by a few milimeters. works perfectly now.
