Quick notes on Louisville

I raced today and really enjoyed the course. The swim was definitely interesting but fun. I’d like to see it done this way next year.

This is the best bike course I’ve ever raced. Lot’s of hills but the easiest last 30 miles anywhere - pretty much all down hill with a tail wind.

The run was a little boring, but well shaded and good surface. As is seen by the top run times, it is pretty fast. I didn’t feel the heat that rroof mentioned. I was comfortable all day, if I stayed wet.

If you are waffling about signing up, I would say go ahead. We really lucked out with the weather today, but is probably the only risk for next year.

As for my race, if anyone actually was interested, I crashed at the first aid station. I managed to PR on the bike an had trouble with my hip on the run. But given the situation, I’m happy to be only ~20 min slower than I had hoped.

If you have any questions about the course, I’ll answer them hopefully tonight before tomorrow’s registration.

How did they handle the cutoff times with the TT start? Is midnight still the cutoff? when did the last swimmer hit the water?

does online signup start tomorrow at 9am?

You should qualify your “review” in that you were 17th overall, beating several pros and are from the heat in NC! Wow!

Great job Richard! We were all watching on ironmanlive.

Oh. Sorry to hear about the crash. But good race, nonetheless.

There was a cyclist seriously injured (broken bones and head injury) near Lagrange when a woman in a mini-van pulled out at an intersection and hit the cyclist. He had to be stat-flighted to University of Louisville hospital.

Not being a competitor, I was not aware that the bike course in Oldham County was not a closed course. Huh? I thought all Ironman courses had closed bike courses. Apparently at Louisville, this was not the case. Local news showed cyclists out on the course sharing the road with cars.

Very few if any IM’s have closed bike courses. I’ve certainly never heard of one…

Not at Canada either. Saw a portion on hte computer and it showed traffic whizzing by.

In LP they only let traffic on the roads in the other direction. This is obviously still not “closed roads” and can be dangerous.

It was nice bumping into you at the start.

Congrats on a nice race and sorry about your mishap…

the four way intersections were manned by police. I almost got hit by a guy coming out of the country club. the trafiic was extremely light and the police did a great job, esp. for their first time.

Ironman Germany has closed roads.

On an unrelated note, did anyone understand what announcer Mike Hamel said or had to say? He was enthusiastic/bubbly for sure but he was very hard to understand. Someone told me that he is German and English is not his native tongue. I said, no shit, of course he is German, look at his capri pants. Plus I am not really a true Tennessean either and I don’t sound like that.

I just came back from cheering in the last finishers. I talked to Steve, the race director, and they took 17 hours from the last starter at 7:37. So, the last official finisher had to cross before 12:37. I was wondering if you started earlier if you were allowed more than 17 hours or if there will be an asterisk by your name. I don’t know, just speculating.
