Questions about Compression Socks

Is anyone using them and actually feeling a benefit? I am a little bit confused as to what they do. Promote bloodflow to the lower leg to help recovery? From what I understand blood has aa tendency to collect in the lower leg and the compression pushes the blood back upwards? How does this help recovery?

I see TriSports has VitalSox, is anyone using this brand or have another brand to recommend? Do you use the padded or ultra-light model?

I am not asking so much for myself as for my Mom. She has MS and the biggest issue she deals with is weakness and fatigue in her legs, especially her lower legs. She is relatively active, goes to the gym 5 days a week, walks, eats right, etc. But if she is on her feet for too long for a one day, she is really tired and sore the next day and I am wondering if the compression socks might offer her some relief.

When do you wear them? To bed? All the time? Whenever you are tired/sore?

Thanks in advance.

I use them because my feet/ankles tend to swell in the evening on heavy training days. I find myself pulling them out mid-afternoon after long rides. They help keep the blood circulating and prevent the pooling of fluid - at least for me. For the cost, they are certainly worth a shot for your mom. I hope they help!

I have a nice pair from Sugoi called recovery socks, but I can’t find them online. The ones you found are probably just fine as well.

SwBkRn44,

I used a pair after my crash this year. Couldn’t bike for almost 3 weeks until my knee finally regenerated the skin I lost. There was enough injury to my leg that it disrupted the normal return blood flow to the heart. I experienced significant swelling in the lower leg and ankle. The compression socks worked great! After wearing them for just a few hours my leg and ankle returned to normal size.

Just like the previous poster said, they prevented fluid build-up/pooling and swelling. What struck me was they was that they seemed more like knee high nylons for women. When I stretched them to put them on I thought they might be too tight and would restrict circulation but after I got them on they felt comfortable and I really didn’t notice them. My only problem was bending the knee enough to reach my toes to get the sock on.

They definitely work!

I have X socks from backcountry.com. Very happy with them.
