So I’m off to Europe on holiday, with an IM to kick it all off…
Given I’ll have my bike with me and might ride it I’m worried that this will conflict with my other desire… to hire a 911 to drive around in on vacation afterwards.
How do you 911 (997) owners go getting a bike in the car? Given it’s a rental not sure I’ll be able to get a roof rack or bike rack. My bikes in a soft bag.
Would I be better off getting a convert?
Other similar cars that might be worth thinking about instead?
Given today’s climate, if you don’t want to post your car ownership status it would be great if you could PM me
a friend of mine owns a 997 targa and carries his bike inside the car on the rear seats without any problems. just make sure you have it inside the bag so you don’t scratch anything and you’ll be fine
You can even get a bike in the front seat with the wheels/seat off if you put it in a thick bag to stop the crank biting the interior. Not very good if you have a passenger however!
However the cleanest looking solution would be the techquipment roof-racks for 987/997. Otherwise there are also aftermarket hitch solutions but I think it means taking a drill to the bumper
I drive a 911 and have been able to take the front wheel off and stuff the bike into the back when the seats are folded down. It works just fine, but is still a pain to squeeze in just right. I’d like a roof setup but that option is very expensive, and the hitch-mount is not acceptable.
As others have said, depending on your size you can squeeze one in the back but it’s tight and you have to be careful. If you’re going to be doing a lot of driving with the bike I’d definitely recommend the rack. I had one for my 996 and my 997S and it was SO convenient. It’s quick to put on and take off and it does a great job, other than there is no lock for the bike so you need something to lock it to the rack. Have you called the rental place to see if they have them for rent?
x3 on checking into the Tequipment roof rack with the rental. I have a hard time getting golf clubs into the rear seat of mine, a bike can be done but really tough to do it without eventually damaging the car. You can go with the cab, but it’s probably a security issue with the soft top.

Am I the only one that finds Porsche owners saying that a roof rack is “expensive” VERY humorous? It’s like the dudes that spend $2-$5k on a high end bike, but are too cheap to get a pro fit done.
EVERYTHING with Porsches are expensive. It’s one of those things you have to just determine is worth it or not. I don’t think I ever went to a P-Club meet where someone wasn’t talking about overpriced parts, it’s part of the community ethos.
Well, yeah, but I am not gonna run out and buy a Ducati superbike and then complain that the spark plugs are $150+ each. When you buy into that club, I think you lose your right to bitch, the expense comes with the “prestige” of owning a super expensive car that will get the crap kicked out of it by a $8k motorcycle
Was actually thinking of renting an X6 but its not sufficiently “interesting / exotic” (I drive an E92 M3 as a daily driver and a Vantage as weekend toy). Was going to ask the same question of a Bentley Continental but:-
i) Not sure I’d find anyone who’d put a bike in one
ii) I might look like the guy in the picture with a bike on the roof of his F40!
If anyone has any suggestions of something suitably sexy that I could more easily get my bike in, suggestions welcome!

Very true, but you’d be amazed at how much more likely a beautiful woman in a short dress is to get into your car than on your bike. I do agree though that dollar for dollar and even in raw numbers bikes wipe any car off the road…well till you hit the curves sometimes.
That doesn’t apply to Vespas though. The mini-skirted, european women love to hop on thise things.
Somewhat off topic, anyone know a good way to mount a bike on an S2 Elise (the American version) that doesn’t involve drilling into the bodywork? I’m sick of loaning out my car to my brother so I can take his sedan to races.
