I removed old tire from wheel. I used tubular rim tape and glue on tire last time. Do I leave the rim alone? Or try to remove thin layer of tape. I can’t imagine this coming off. When I install new tire do I glue rim and tire? I’m not using tape again.
GooGone will get the tape off if you let it soak for a while. I only did tubulars a couple times, but totally cleaned the rim, and remember doing multiple coats on the rim and tire (letting each one dry before applying the next). Someone should chime in with the “golden rule” for the number of coats, but I can’t remember for sure.
So I have to remove the tape left over?
yes, remove all of the tape

This is why it is better to just use only glue. You can leave some old glue on the rim when you put a new tubular on and it doesn’t hurt anything.

This.
And yes, remove all the old tape.
Goo gone then is the best to remove it?
Yes, either Goo Gone or Goof Off.
and a hairblower/heat gun makes removing glue a bit easier; same with a butter knife.

I don’t think Goo Gone is strong enough…I’d go with Goof Off or straight up acetone (use rubber chemical gloves).
Ok this tape isn’t coming off with goo gone or butter knife. Can I just glue over it for now and glue tire?
You gotta get the tape off. I would NOT recommend gluing over tape…unless you wanna roll a tire in a turn.
Like I said, you gotta use Goof Off or acetone. Goo Gone just isn’t strong enough.
Ok will try goo off. Is this okay to use on Carbon rims?
How about hair dryer to heat tape to take off?
I use a propane little torch bottle and a butter knife
.
Goof Off is fine with carbon rims. However I have never had a problem with Goo Gone. It’s all about the elbow grease. Plan on an hour per wheel.

Goof Off is OK on carbon rims. I have used it on my Zipp 404’s with no ill effects.
I’ve removed the tape on three different wheels. It sucks. It takes a lot of time and patience and is really messy. Acetone didn’t get it done for me. I got some Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK). It still takes a while, but is stronger than acetone, and it works. The guy that said a hour per wheel is right on. Maybe an hour and half.
I recently reglued a tubular tire to a wheel that I had used Vittoria Mastik One glue. It took a quarter of the time and elbow grease to get that off.
Per the Zipp instructional video on youtube, I coated the tire and wheel twice, letting them both set overnight after each coat. Then the wheel a third time, minutes before the tire is mounted.
I’ve used Goof Off, but prefer using Xylene for Vittoria Mastik. Never had an issue. It has potent fumes, so use gloves and a face mask in a well ventilated area if you’re not used to it. For those of us with lots of organic chemistry classes, enclosed areas and no gloves feels normal…![]()
