Question re: powertap & hrm

if you ride with a powertap and use the heart rate strap, will this not work on the run with a watch b/c of coding?

how do you go about this then?

do you use your running hrm on the bike & just not use the head unit for readouts then?

thanks

I use my PT HRM with the powertap, and use my Garmin HRM with my Garmin 305. If you get an ANT+ compatible powertap, the heart rate strap should work with both devices.

The PT head should pick up any HRM strap, just go thru the ID process. I use my Garmin strap and the PT reads it jsut fine. Also works with my polar strap.

Cool. Good to know.
Thank you.

The PT heart rate strap will work with a Garmin, a Garmin strap will work with the PT unit. I do not think any other’s will work with the PT unit.

Really? I do no think this is possible… can you confirm?

Does anybody have or have seen a complete list of devices that are compatible with power tap so that you only have to use one hr monitor strap.

confirmed. use my Garmin strap all the time, including as recently as yesterday. it works no problem. it’s been a while since I used the polar strap, but Garmin for sure. In fact, one of my traning partners uses hers as well.

yeah… I was not questioning the use with GARMIN as they are both ANT+ based; but POLAR utilizes a completely different code/frequency or whatever and I just never thought it was possible to use with POLAR. If so, that would be great and a welcomed surprise, but a surprise nonetheless. I just lost my HRM yesterday so I am trying to figure out what to get next…

For a Powertap 2.4 cpu a Garmin strap will work, but a Polar strap will not. For the older Powertap cpu I believe an old non-coded Polar strap will work, but a Garmin will not.

In the last two years has anyone found a way to make a coded Polar HR strap work with a Powertap 2.4 CPU (wired)? I find myself in this exact situation at the moment. Conversely, is there a way to get a Powertap 2.4 coded HR strap to talk to a Polar device, either with WIND or coded protocol?

I don’t think so.

I have both a coded and a non-coded Polar heart rate strap, and both of them work with with my Powertap LYC. But, I’ve found the LYC is TERRIBLE at picking up heart rate data, even using the strap that came with it.

This completely depends upon what heart rate strap you use. It boils down to two factors which are compatible transmission signal and interdevice communication standard being ANT+. If you are using a Garmin 310XT then it is cake because it is ANT+, the Powertap is ANT+ and the Garmin chest strap is ANT+ and 2.4 mHz, so you are good to go if you are using the 310XT to read your power and provide heart rate.

Polar straps generally broadcast a signal at 5 kHz and are not ANT+ so they will not work.
