Question on recent purchase

Purchased a new crank on black Friday from a site with a discount code. I ordered a SRAM Red crank 172.5, the older non exogram one. I got the box today and in it was a slightly used (light scratches and a small nick) Red Exogram crank 175mm. No original box with signs of use. I found this weird because I was expecting the one I ordered all wrapped up nicely. Should I exchange and try to get what I ordered? The site says out of stock so I might only be able to get the money back. Or should I keep the crank? Was the shop trying to hook me up with something better or did they throw something in a box real quick. It looks decent, but I am 5’7" and afraid I would regret a longer crank than I am used to… maybe I should have ordered a 170mm crank in the first place
Thanks for your help

If you search, you’ll find the two schools of thought. One that believes you run better after riding shorter cranks, and the other (not necessarily contradictory) that says your power output is basically the same over the normal range of crank lengths. That being said, I’d never keep a set of cranks that weren’t the size I was fitted to…if anything I’d rather go shorter. I’m just an inch or so taller than you with normal-ish measurements (32" inseam) and switched to 165s recently. I’d send them back.

Thanks for your help, that is what I needed to hear. As much as I wanted to build it up now, I guess I have to wait lol

Not even a question for me. You paid $ for new, 172.5, got used 175.
would you pay for a new medium shirt and accept a used large?

Touche, I can’t figure out why they gave me a used crank in the first place. Now I have to pay to ship it back to them

If they sent you the wrong item, you shouldn’t have to pay to ship it back.

Was is from a shop or online retailer. I would try to call them to see if they can work something out for the length you need. Good shops will usually try to fix the mistake

If it is the wrong size than ordered then send back. period.
Now on the “used” question. If the teeth are not worn there are a few explanations that it still could be used. A customer wanted to look at it a dropped it. It was in a display case. Everytime a customer wants to see something out of the box the retailer cannot say that the item is then used. One customer trying to buy something can go through all kinds of parts…so how big the scratch? Again though, if it is the wrong size, send it back

Agree with the others, you shouldn’t be passing to ship it back

Where did you buy it from? Absolutely terrible service. Call them, have them send you a label to ship old one back and send you the new one.

Personally I’d send it back but if you’re tempted to keep it, then call them and see if you can negotiate a partial refund to make up for their error. And tell them that you’ll send pics in support of your case as well.
