Question on buying a car on Craigslist

So, I’m searching through the ads in craigslist for cars to buy, and I noticed that some of the pictures have the license plate numbers blurred out so that you can’t read the number.

Why would someone do this? Should this be some type of red flag or something? Just wondering what the reasons might be, and if it should concern me.

.

Don’t be concerned. I used to spend time on an Audi forum and guys did that all the time. It’s a sign of being stupidly, unbelievably , ridiculously moronic and paranoid…or maybe bored with too much time and access to photoshop.

After all, no one EVER sees your license plates when you’re driving, do they?

Thanks. I was just wondering because it seemed a strange thing to take the time to do, and I couldn’t think of a reason why.

You are welcome. Just make sure you have the car checked out by an ASE mechanic, and try to find a car that has a likelihood to stay together.

“I noticed that some of the pictures have the license plate numbers blurred out so that you can’t read the number.”

That’s because it’s not hard to get records of cars from the Motor Vehicle Dept, find out where it lives, and stalk the people or steal the car.

I used to blur out my own license plate on my website until I realized that it’s easy to find my address via any name/phone-number lookup-- and even directions to my house. This is dangerous in a general sense because there are so many psychos out there… but then again, no one can be 100% protected at all minutes. (The best course of action to to be mindful of yourself, and cultivate neighbors and family to be mindful of each other. Create a good connections with others near you; have neighbors get curious if strangers arrive at your house.)

This is great advice. I have lived in several neighborhoods. The first house my wife and I owned was in Dearborn Hts. about 4 blocks from Detroit. It was a very nice neighborhood with cookie cutter lots (40x120). We all got along and knew when something was amiss at each other’s homes. It would take an hour to put the garbage out because you would end up meeting with someone and start talking about something. We still keep in contact with those people.

Then we moved to a newer neighborhood. The lots were twice as big. THe funny thing is that we hardly new any of our neighbors there. Most of the people would drive right into their garages shut the door, and the next time you saw them was the following morning when they would drive their cars to work again. I can remember one time that I saw a guy walking around acting suspiciously at one of my neighbors house. At our Dbn. Hts. home I would have gone out immediately and started asking questions. But in Canton, I really had to stop and ask myself why I care. Finally I did go out and approach the guy, who said he was a siding contractor. So I chatted with the guy for a bit, and told him that I was going to tell the owner of the house that he was out getting an estimate. The guy said okay, and then left. When I told the neighbor about his siding contractor, the guy looked at me like I had lobsters coming out of my head. I guess he didn’t get that I was telling him that someone was “casing” his house.

We are in a nice neighborhood now. There are 6 of us on a private road out in the boonies. I know my neighbors are watching after my house like I am watching theirs and it is nice.

I am in a nice neighborhood where most people don’t see each other, but my neighbors tend to watch over me - especially because I am a single woman living alone. So they welcome me home when I’ve been gone for a while, or if I need help, they are right there. We’ve done pretty ok considering it’s not that friendly a town – but I live on a court, so it’s quiet.
