Question For The Wrenches (1)

I’ve got a two year old Felt F65 with a Shimano triple crank. I’m thinking of upgrading to an Ultegra double (I never use the granny gear). If I do this I know I’ll need new derailleurs, chain, bottom bracket, and cassette. Will I also need new shifters or will the ones I’ve got still work with a double?

I don’t know that you’ll need a new derailler, chain, and cassette unless the chain and cassette are worn badly. THe derailler might not be ideal, but I think that the long cage will work…it just might look funny. If you have 9 speed shifters, then they were double and triple compatible…the 10 has a different shifter I believe.

Thanks. I’ve got about 4,000 miles on the drivetrain. There’s no slippage when I’m riding or shifting. Is there a way to tell how worn the parts are?

I just upgraded both bikes to DA 10sp. I have a complete Ultegra 9sp drive train, including two cogsets, front DR (braze on–PM me if you are not sure of the significance of this), rear DR, Crankset (BB integrated) with 53/42 chainrings, bar end shifters and chain. All for you my friend. At a reasonable price. The bike they came off (Cervelo P2K) was new about a year ago. I have the Syntace aerobars that came with it also.

All you need is a new bottom bracket and crankset. The shifters, derailleurs, chain and cassette will work fine.

Depending on how much you want to spend, it might we worth the $ to go with Ultegra 10 BB and crankset as 10 speed components will become more prevalent in the next few years. Upgrading part by part is a little easier than dropping a lot of cash on a complete grouppo. In the end it’s more expensive than buying an entire grouppo but it depends on what your budget/needs are.
