Question for the Race Directors

Once you decide to hold an event, how far out from the event do you finalize the bike and run course? How far out from the event do you secure all necessary permits?

Hey Nick … if you are a first year event i would start the process ASAP or Jan 1 if your race is later in the year. Do what you can to solidify the course now. With any race, changes are always the possibility.

I work w/ an established event and we usually begin the process early in the year for a late July and early August event. The county/cities we work with are all good folks but require ALOT of detail and quite often these details seem to change year to year and takes forever to get all of our permits … we work in a challenging place to put on events and we need permits from everybody and everything! Start early, work on relationships w/ the local officials (police, fire, city, county, parks, etc.) and keep picking away at it!

On the other side … i helped launch an event in NW Arkansas and the permit process was almost non-existent, only required county approval, and approval / assistance from the park we staged the race in … it was almost too easy relative to what i see currently.

Best of luck!

Best of luck putting on your triathlon in Tallahassee. Keep me in the loop as I am always interested in making a trip up to Tally/FSU! Any idea when you are gonna put on your race?

I wish I was putting on a race. My question was more for finding out in relation to Sommer’s cancellation of the Miami race this weekend. I just can’t believe that the bike course permit was filed/amended so late. It just blows my mind.

The only race we have up here in Tally is Redhills. Which I think is a great race. I’d love to put one on in the area as I think there are some great roads to ride on once you get outside of the Capital. Unfortunately, stupid law school and work keeps me from having the time to organize such an event.

I wish Redhills was held in the spring and in the fall. Its a great to start a season and I think it would be great to end the season there. Would make for a nice way to check on improvement.

You know, I’m gonna contact the RedHills organizer and ask if I can help out in organizing an event in the fall.

Red Hills is a great event…my wife and I actually did it 2 years ago.
