Constantly pumping up my tubeless tires is driving me nuts - does anyone have any experience with the tire sealants i’ve seen - Stans, the bontrager stuff etc? Is it used primarily to stop slow annoying leaks (ie tires losing air overnight) or to seal the tire if/when a thorn or something punctures it?
i am retro, but old-fashioned tubes work pretty darn well for me. i rarely have to pump up my mtb tires at all. (but not so retro that i don’t use full suspension with some decent travel.)
related, if anyone knows, if you have, say, a 5 mm slash in one of these new tubeless tires, is the tire basically toast? or can you fix it at home and keep on using it? can you fix it on the trail and keep riding?
i ask this because this has happened to me more than once on the road and some duct tape in the tire and a spare tube did the repair fine (i carry a bit of duct tape with me).
Stans, although I’ve heard the Slime and Bontrager stuff work just as well. They will stop the slow leak and help seal punctures. If you are running non-tubeless tires on tubeless rims they will definetely leak quickly without sealant.
you carry a spare tube for any big slashes or things the sealant won’t seal. It’s a bit messy but you just take the special valve stem out of the rim, pop in your standard tube, booting the tire if necessary and reinflate. You can’t boot it with tape though as there’s goo all over the inside of the tire, you’ll need a dollar bill, some tyvek or something like that. You can probably superglue or patch the tire when you get home.
