Question for the married men/women about rings (updated)

My girlfriend has small hands and doesn’t like to attract too much attention to herself. I asked her about engagement ring preferences and all she said was “not a solitaire” and “not gaudy”. What diamond size is not gaudy? I looked at a 1/2c ring that I think would look ridiculous on her (too big of a stone I think). Second, what isn’t a solitaire? Does this mean it has sidestones? Help a clueless dude out please…

If she wants diamonds and not just a band… then maybe something like this.

LOL here.

You actually believe that she doesn’t want the biggest rock that doesn’t look ridiculous? Man have you got a lot to learn. You will learn the rules after a few years, but that still won’t help much.

Half a carat isn’t too big for anyone. One carat even for the smallest hands is perfectly reasonable.

Deal with reality. Size matters.

A diamond solitaire ring is a band with one diamond. Do a google picture search for diamond solitaire if you need to.

What diamond size is not gaudy?

Whatever size would be “horrifically gawdy” on another woman’s hand.

I’m sorry you’re surrounded by such materialistic women. Maybe you haven’t looked hard enough. I’m one of the most minimalistic people I know and my girl still wants me to marry her. She also complains a lot about a ruby and diamond ring (small rocks) that she owns as being too much ring for a simple girl like her.

ROTFL. You are so screwed.

Roll the tape forward a few years. What is she going to think then?

It is kind of like poker. You lose while you learn the rules.

Congratulation on your upcoming wedding. Aside from making the babies, it will be the start of the biggest growing experience of your life.

Where do you live, Beverly Hills? (Ok, Florida I see but whatever…) When my best friend got married his girlfriend made him take the ring back in favor of his grandmother’s engagement ring that was bought during the depression and that has a diamond a wee bit larger than a grain of sand. And yea, I have no idea what I’m getting myself into but good girls are worth a risk.

“I have no idea what I’m getting myself into but good girls are worth a risk.”

OK, maybe there is hope for you after all.

I guess this would count as a solitaire, but it’s really small and set in stainless steel. Very cool rings in the opinion of a non-diamond seeking girl (me.)

I LOVE that. Great find, Erin.

They are really cool rings. I found them at a little store in Hood River OR. They have a lot of nice styles and the other Xen jewelry is really nice too.

In this one, the center stone is only 3/10 carats:

.

Check out eternity bands (rings that have small pieces of stone - diamonds or others - all the way around). I have two (engagement and wedding band) and I absolutely LOVE them. They are beautiful when worn together, we can add to the “stack” as years go by", and it’s perfect for someone who is active/works with her hands as there’s nothing sticking up waiting scratch you or, worse yet, waiting for the stone to loosen and fall out. Seriously, I can’t tell you how many compliments I get on my eternity rings.

dude, the xen stuff is awesome. is there anywhere that carries it in Canada (anyone know?)

Kevin did you just call me dude?

I checked the XEN site and althought they sell in several countries, Canada doesn’t look like one of them.

Dude (hee hee), I’m usually anti-ring because I think most people get 'em for the bragging rights. However, the Xen one you pointed out is precisely the sort of ring I can see myself wearing. It’s unique (huge plus) and elegant but understated. VERY cool.

The other nice thing is they retail for between $300-1,000 depending on the style and how many little diamonds. So you could get an engagement ring and an engagement bike!

You just made me laugh out loud. There are some things that only experience can teach.

Sometimes I forget how wise you are, I apologize for that.

I just need to find an engagement boyfriend first.
