A bit of theory question for the coaches out there. I put in a solid 18 weeks of training for this weeks Augusta 70.3 only to come down with a severe cold halfway through the taper. Due to some family circumstances the taper began a bit earlier than planned and was a bit more dramatic in the first week than even planned. Even with this cutback the rest and diet was less than during the regular training. The question is now that I obviously can not race at full effort, I entered another race in 4 and 1/2 weeks.
How far back in the training process should I go back before the newly scheduled race. After a few days of little or no training, I figure it should take me 7-10 days before I am back at normal training volume and plan about a 17 day cycle going into the taper about 10-11 days out.
Should I just going back to the orginal plan and retrace my steps to race day.
I know that I could still finish the race but really don’t want to waste the training on an effort that does not give me the chance to go for it and runs the risk of getting sicker. I have raced for 27 years and these things happen so while it is upsetting when it originally happens I know there is a race another day and want to maximize my chance for a strong race.
I am still planning to go to the race to support training partners and have a good time.
Any thoughts on a training plan for the newly sheduled race.

You know better than anyone else out there what to do. We don’t know you enough to give proper advice.

Why can't you put in a full effort? Are you still sick? So you had an extra week(ish) of taper, and it was steeper than you expected. If you did put in that solid 18 weeks, that should have minimal effect on your time. As long as you're recovered from your cold, you should still be able to put in a solid race.

Yes I am still sick and on medication for another week. I have not done anything for three days and am a bit better but not anywhere full strength. I have a history of colds going to my respitory system if I am not careful that is why the change in plans. Just finishing the race is not what I am looking to do so putting the effort to just finishing is not worth starting.
