For my race, I have been fortunate enough to have 4 state police officers to man my 4 major intersections for free. I was told by the commanding officer yesterday that they will only be able to spare 2 this year. I’ve always appreciated any race that has had this luxury and want to continue to offer it to my racers. But, at $160/hr, mandatory 6 hours of pay, $1500 is a huge proposition. Do you all consider this money well spent? We’ve all been in races that do not have troopers at intersections, especially small ones like mine (only 55 competitors are allowed). At this point, I’m leaning towards the NO side. I’m hoping that I might be able to get one county sheriff, and one state park police but thats not even near a definite.
Just a logistical point, my race is reverse, the bikes will be well spread out by the time they hit the pavement…
Any suggestions? Thanks!!
Safety trumps all.
My event is having to cover the policing cost this year for the first time (12th year running). Our hit is between $4000 and $4500.
Unfortunately we only got notice after we set our rates.

Thanks Rob, I was thinking the same thing. And since the precedent has been set in my race, no matter how small, I’d like to keep it. So I’ll make some calls.
Ouch, but safety first.
1 thing to remember is that per NYSDOT a volunteer is not technically allowed to stop a car so if it is a busy intersection it would be best to have law enforcement. Definitely see if County or Park Police can assist
Thanks Boots, I did not realize that. I will check with law enforcement first.
you weren’t sleeping during the race directors meeting were you
.
Is it legal to close them down and just get volunteers to man it? Or is it more complicated…

If you close down roadways, I believe you then have to pay $5 million insurance to DOT, so there is a cost regardless.
Budget allocation goes to safety first - we pay a big hunk for police every race and it is totally worth it. We have also often use a combination of law enforcement if staffing is an issue or the course crosses over Parish lines, etc.

Thanks for your input Susan, in some talks right now!
