Question for pilots

How is it that these air force weather recon planes are able to fly through 145mph winds in a hurricane without getting thrashed?

Think of it as swimming in moving water…you don’t really feel the movement of the water unless you are trying to stand still in it. Once you’re floating, you are just moving with the water mass. Same with flying in a moving air mass. Now, as the plane passes through masses of air that are moving at different velocities, there is a lot of turbulence, but the wind itself isn’t thrashing the airplane.

If you go to their site, the Reserve Squadron that flies these missions will actually walk you through a mission, explaining how and why they fly the way they do.
