As some of you know I have no disc left between L5 and S1.
On Monday morning I woke up with severe spasms caused, I know by previous days photographic job where i was photographing kids on the floor bent over for hours…so there i was where any movement would send like electric shocks and i nearly fainted actually…saw the spots before my eyes and all that…never in my life have i come close to fainting like this…
…so anyway, my wife took me to the hospital and they looked after me…i was given a pain killer injection in my ass and i lay down on the bed to recover…then as the spasms were still there i was given some codeine i think for more pain relief…so i felt better and then i decided i was walking out of the hospital…so like 10 steps into the wlak out i started feeling really bad again and had to go back on the bed to lie down again…im not used to taking pain killers or medicines so they said this was normal as i was given way more than im used to
…to cut a long story short i came back home and was given the following:
So my question is…how long do i have to take them for…I…em…didnt ask…the bottle and packs dont have a use for so many days or anything…plus any info on what you think of these medicines…
I have the same issue no disc between L5 and S1 and between L4 and L5, plus lots of arthritic spuring. Went through the whole pain management routine and while it helped it also created more problems than is solved. Finally I found a Chiropractic doctor that had spinal decompression treatment, I got it done weekly for a while and now am at once every three weeks. I am running and Biking basically pain free now with only NSAIDS to help.
wow that sounds great…i had an MRI done and im the proces of STILL getting the images etc so i can show em around on this forum as some people kindly offered to take a look for me…that was back in April…anyway…i have a meet with a specialist in September but in the meantime i need those MRI images to talk to my chiropractor or whatever to advise me on what to do and not do etc etc etc
.
Not sure that works correctly, I tried one of those inversion tables thinking I could save money and do it myself, but the angles and amount of the decompression are different and it didn’t help.
Just got done with a spine decompression treatment, same problems as you, L5, S1, couldn’t walk and pain killers didn’t even take the edge off. Each doctor is different in the machine they use so some of the names of treatment are different. Basically the treatment places you on a computerized mechanical table, locks your hips in place then targets the specific disk(s) that are bulged or herniated and stretches your spine (decompression). Usually you must have treatment 5 days a week for 4 consecutive weeks. I’ve battle this issue for the last year and a half and in light of my last flair up decided to have the treatment. I also personally know others who were told that their only option was surgery, rather than go under the knife they decided on decompression and are now healed.
my wife had her back fused last year, L5-S1. She was on many of the same meds you listed and had many of the symptoms you list. as a sidenote the doctor that operated on her is Tyler Farrar’s dad. My suggestion to you would be to not look for the answer on an internet forum. unless you get hooked up with a great orthopedist it’s a bunch of armchair doctors. we spent many hours talking to the doctor about what to do and follow up treatment. a good back doctor is the only person who will know exactly what the hell they are talking about.
of course, forums are a way of making oneself feel better as loads of other people spring up with the same issues and they tell you about themselves…
…the next course of action for me is a UK specialist orthopeadic guy whos coming to Gibraltar in September who im down to see…i had MRIs in April and i still havent been advised on what i should do about my condition…i just had a huge flare up on Monday…actually, the question i asked has not been answered yet!!!

the answer is simple: ask the doctor.
