I purchased my first handgun today. I went to our local gun store with indoor range and tested out several guns, glocks, Springfield armory, S&W. I settled on the S&W M&P9 2.0 9mm. The grip just felt better and more comfortable that all the others I tested. My question is what holster do you recommend, I will probably be more interested in something that I could still tuck in my shirt? The gun store didn’t have any to choose from specifically for this gun for a lefty like me. Any advice would be appreciated!
You will have to decide if you want Inside Waist Band IWB or Outside - usually you have to get bigger jeans for inside!LOL

I am really not criticizing but are you getting it to carry around because you don’t feel safe?
Jumping to conclusions here but if I lived somewhere where I felt the need to carry a gun around with me I would probably look for somewhere safer to live.

You should have a friend take you shooting. It’s fun, if not empowering. You can start small with a .22 and move up from there.

I can think of one person that I know who definitely has a gun. He hunts. He’s also the kind of person who I would not feel safe around if he had his gun with him.

That’s unfortunate. 99% of gun owners are extremely careful. I almost laid a pistol on my bed with the barrel pointing toward me and I quickly caught myself. It was unloaded and really no way for it to otherwise go off, but I almost broke a major rule.
I pretend to hunt, no time with 3 kids and sports. I take my older 2 to the range when we can. They’re learning well how to properly handle firearms, and my 7-year-old is quite the marksman.

I live in a pretty nice neighborhood. But it isn’t gated and crooks know how to find their way to it. That being said, I don’t carry. However, I did load the shotgun and a pistol and keep them handy after the hurricane devastated the area.
I have occasionally carried a handgun to the woods when picking blackberries, but it was because it was in an area where people go to party at one of the creeks. I didn’t anticipate any problems, but wanted to have something to protect me and the family in the unlikely event that I encountered someone who was drunk and and a bit dangerous.
I’ve never encountered another car on fire while driving on the highway, but I carry a fire extinguisher (actually 2) in my car in the unlikely event that I do see one and need to help rescue someone. I hope I never have to use it, but it is there in case. The handguns are the same way, but I’ve probably carried one five times in the last 20 years.

Do you need a permit for concealed carry?
I carry inside the waste band…to me it feels more secure and with the right shirt its completely undetectable unless you were to grab my hips/waste area. I also carry in the front/side on the side of my shooting hand. You can’t tuck in your shirt or the top of the gun and handle is visible. It will feel awkward at first but the more you do it the more comfortable you will be.

If you’re going to carry inside waistband I highly recommend something other than kydex. Sweat can get in-between the gun and the holster and has nowhere to go.

my first carry gun was a springfield xd subcompact 40cal. it has a 3" barrel. it carries 12+1. it is kinda heavy and big but at the time, a couple years ago, that was what i thought was a good fit for me. i’m a springfield fan. when sig came out with their 365 i thought i wanted to go that route. i thought that 9 vs 40 ballistics were close enough that i’d was ok going to a 9mm. so i bought one and carried that for not quite a year. i use an alien gear holster. you can buy different shells for different guns but keep the leather so it’s quite inexpensive to have one holster that will work with different guns. swapping shells is not something i want to do every other day, but it’s not so expensive that you cant try a different shell with a different gun, realize it’s not what you want, then be depressed about the money you just pissed away.

i carry it at my 4 o’clock. i have hands like an orangoutang, big with long fingers. carrying the sig was a piece of cake, easy to conceal and wear every day, forgot i had it on. shooting it at the range was not ‘fun’ but, Heaven forbid i ever have to draw, i dont care about fun i care about what will get the job done. i thought the sig could and would get it done. then i took a couple lessons that allowed me to draw from my concealed holster and it was ugly. step one of getting shots on target is having a good grip on the gun. the better your purchase the better the chance you have of success. i couldn’t get a good grip on that small gun in what i would consider a timely manner. it bothered me so much i went back to the xd.
i’m ok with the added weight of the xd. the bigger grip is great for my monkey hands. i cant do appendix carry, it’s just too uncomfortable. i’m not fat at all so i’m not working around a gut, i just dont like it. i realize there are more limitations with a 4 o’clock carry but that’s what i train with.
after taking a close quarter handgun class a couple weeks ago i really want to try a kydex holster. for quick draws with clothes involved i felt like the chaff guard and movement of the leather on my holster was a hinderance. watching the guys who had a molded holster, it ‘appeared’ they had an easier time getting a good, first grip on their gun. i’m very new to drawing from a concealed holster so it was prob a combo of my inexperience and the size/shape of my holster. this is what i’ll prob go with next.

I love Kramer holsters in horsehide. Horsehide is almost like Kydex and cow leather hybridized.
