Question about upgrading my campy wheels

Hi all,

I just purchased a Campy bike. I need to update the wheels to a more aero set up. I’m guessing that the front wheel doesn’t matter but when looking to replace the rear wheel, do I need to make sure it is Campy compatible? Or will any freewheel work? On that note, what is the difference between a freewheel and freehub?

Wheels are 650c and the groupo is Veloce. If anyone is looking to sell…

Thanks!

Freewheel and freehub are virtually interchangeable terms.

Yeah, all you need to worry about is making sure the freehub on the rear wheel is campy compatible. Campy cassettes use a different spline. You could get more complicated and attempt to make a shimano cassette work with campy, but I’m guessing you’re probably not interested in getting that crazy.

The best case scenario is a campy cassette\hub with a campy chain working with a campy gruppo…
BTW, the front wheel is more important for aerodynamics than the rear.

If you can find them, both Ambrosio andAmerican Classic make cassettes for Shimano/Sram freehubs with Campagnolo spacing, which means

AC cassette + any Shimano rear wheel + your Campy drivetrain

would be OK.
How many sprockets on your current Campy cassette? If there are 8 then you can use old 7-speed Shimano sprockets and spacers on a 130mm rear wheel, the spacing is the same as Campy 8-speed.

Thanks for your reply! My bike is currently being tuned up in the shop but once I get it back, I may have a few more questions for you (all). Thanks again!

I see no reason why anybody should buy shimano wheel+AC Campy compatible cassette when buying new wheels.

  • Just get a rear wheel for Campa + campa cassette, works better than any 3.part cassettes.

I really can’t afford a new wheel, if I find a deal on a used Shimano Zipp or HED, I’d like to take it.

I use a Shimano rear wheel on my Campag drivetrain all the time. It works just fine.

Both my training wheel (PT) and my race wheels (Zipp) have Shimano 10 spd cassettes and I run Campag bar end shifters with a Record RD.

Also works fine with Ergopower shifters.

If you want to buy used or later resell your wheel, it is a lot easier to buy/sell Shimano. The AC casettes worked fine for me.

So, I don’t mean to have you guys do all the work but can you link me to a Shimano freewheel adapter to a Campy 10 speed? I searched most of the above companies and didn’t have an easy time finding what I needed.

Thanks in advance!

ALSO: I don’t need to worry about the front wheel, right? The front will work, whether the hub is Shimano/Campy/Space Alien as long as it’s 650c?

Will an American Classic conversion cassette allow me to ride a Campagnolo 10 speed drive train on a Shimano wheel?

The American Classic conversion cassette is a 10 speed Campagnolo cassette designed to fit a Shimano 9 and 10 speed hub. It does not fit on a Shimano 10 speed only hub. This is an easier fix than installing a new cassette body and cam plate and then re-dishing the wheel. Our conversion cassettes are made specifically designed and manufactured as a conversion cassette and are not chopped and re-spaced cassettes. We offer the following sizes in steel cogs on an alloy carrier: 11-23 or 12-25. They are $105.00 US each and shipping and you can order a conversion cassette from your local American Classic dealer or by calling American Classic.

I’ve done all that has been mentioned below for 10 and 11 speed campy. Shimano and Campy 10 speed are almost interchangable so try it before you purchase an AC cassette or Campy freehub. If you are going to 11speed, then AC makes cassettes for that or you can get a Campy compatible freehub (new, used, etc). If you are looking at used wheels, most (Zipp 2006 or newer, Reynolds, Easton) all sell campy and shimano freehubs separate from their wheels. I’ve never had to redish when changing a freehub (going from 10 to 11 speed), which can be done with two allen wrenches that removes the shimano freehub and installs the Campy freehub. Sometimes you need spacers (one for shimano 10 and two for campy 11) , which are readily available as well.
For tools - you will need a campy cassette removal tool for campy cassettes and/or a shimano cassette tool for an AC cassette - depending on which route you go.
All in all, it’s a pretty simple change and one that takes only a minute to do.

Compact and Quad…I think you are my best friends in the whole world

Random thread revival, but thought it might prove useful to someone in the future.
This company recently came to my attention:

http://wheelsmfg.com

Under ´shifting conversions´ they offer all sorts of spacer converter kits to crossmatch Shimano/Sram and Campgnolo drivetrains.

I have no connection with the company, but the stuff looks pretty neat.

This works pretty well also:

Dont believe people that tell you that you can just throw a shimano / sram cassette on there though… especially with bar-end shifters. You wont want to ride that way… especially when it starts skipping under load.

Apparently American Classic stopped making their 10 speed conversion cassette… only the WheelsMfg one is readily available now, and it uses Ultegra cogs : /… But I still run them

I’ve done this on several occasions when using a Campy race wheel from my road bike with my Shimano-equipped tri bike. Aside from doing some minor tweaking of the rear derailleur, I’ve had no issues at all. It CAN be done.
