Question about tires and aerodynamics

Question for you all. I know that when you select tires (and tubes) for time trialing, you should take into account both rolling resistance and aerodynamics. There is data, for example, showing that even through Bontrager Race Lite X Pro’s have lower rolling resistance than the Bonty Aero TT’s, the latter have lower overall drag once you also factor in aerodynamics. But here’s my question. It seems to me that aerodynamics would be much more important for the front tire than the back tire. So in the case of the front tire, yeah, the Aero TTs are probably best. But what about the back? Would the lower rolling resistance Race Lite Pro’s be better there since I presume the aerodynamics are a lesser factor in the overall drag for the rear tire? Or is there so little difference between the two tires that who cares?

For those who use Bonty’s for time trialing, what do run on the front and back?

I have been using the Bontrager RXL AeroWing TT tires on both the front and rear the since May of '08.

Take the Lower RR tire, and fill in the gap with shoe goo.

Disclamer: I’ve never tried this. I can’t see why it wouldn’t work though.

I had a team mate back in the early 90’s that used black silicone caulking to do just what you suggested.

Sure, let me be the guinea pig! I certainly see the logic, but don’t know that I’d want to deal with the clean up and other hassles that’d come with tire changes. What can I say, that’s why I run clinchers instead of tubulars as it is.

You’d have to see if the goo sticks better to itself or the tire. If it’s the former, then no mess :-).

So far I’ve only used it to patch tread slices.

well sometimes the lower RR tire is also wider

shoe goo cant fix that =)

How durable have the the Aerowings been for you? Are they o.k. to train on in your opinion? Also, how would you compare their ride quality next to a higher TPI tire like the Vittoria EVO Cx?
Thanks.

I have been riding a 21mm Aerowing front for training for the last three months and had no problem. No flats. I do ride quality roads.

Anyone out there with experience using the Bontrager Aero TT (19 or 23) on the Hed C2 rims?
