Question about Exercise Physiology Careers

Well, I have a degree in Exercise phys from a good school with a great program and even got an offer right out of school to work at a top human performance lap. The trouble was, I like stuff…cars, clothes, bikes, vacations etc… In 1993 my offer was $27K/yr…and after taxes that didn’t leave much. So like people from all other majors of study, I took a miserable job in sales. I made double that first year and now several years later, I’m doing very well.

I never regretted that choice of study. I was pasionate about it (still am very interested in it), I just couldn’t make the finances work and didn’t imagine being happy trying to squeak by and barely pay my bills. Triathlon offers me a great way to stay in touch with what I learned then…and I’ve learned more since. Maybe one day I’ll find a way to combine all of it together and still manage the income I need.

As with any choice of study, there is no promise that it will work out in the end or even remain interesting months or years later. I think it’s a VERY good choice though. The science background offers many pathways one can take if one feels the calling. Lots of things can change when your in your late teens to early twenties…
