The geometry is a bit different between a CX and road bike, but a good CX bike does offer a lot of versatility. Typically a CX bike might feel more “twitchy” due to the head tube angle and wheelbase, but I have not found it too bad.
I know of a couple of mountain bikers that are selling their road bikes and getting a Scott Addict CX, which is still ligher than most road bikes.
