Quarq Magnet Putty

Guys,

Need to install the Quarq magnet to a P3 frame. Any options from the hardware store that will work. The guys in the bike shop suggested hot glue gun, but maybe there is an equivalent putty to what Quarq ships with its magnets? Also noticed that the clearance between the P3 frame and Quarq is a bit less than on my previous Slice. I am assuming there is just enough for the magnet as I have heard no issues from anyone, but may as well check if there are any quirks to be aware of.

Get the hot glue gun. Perfect for this situation. I did the same for my SRM magnet on my P5. You will find it a useful tool for many things around the house. Extremely fast, secure bond, and readily removable.

+1 on the Hot Glue. It’s fast, hold is super strong.

I used this on my old Speed Concept: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Loctite-0-85-fl-oz-Plastic-Epoxy-1360788/100371824#

Hey Dev!
You’d be better with hot glue. The Quarq putty is a pain to remove. Just use hot glue, just way more convenient. Since i Hot Glued my magnet it has never failed and is still holding strong.

I used some double-sided automotive mounting tape–never had any issues at all. It works great and won’t be a pain to remove if I need to later on. I just cut out a circle of tape the same size as the magnet itself and mounted it just behind the bottom bracket.
Magic Mount was the brand I used, but I know 3M makes some too

Quarq sells a special putty. It’s like two components you rub together and it dries rock hard.

There is also a ring that goes between the bottom bracket and frame with a magnet on it. That is by far the most secure IMO.

what, you don’t just want to reuse my 3M electrical tape from st croix???

Wouldn’t a strong 3M double sided work fine.

until it doesn’t, then your magnet has an amazingly good chance of snapping onto your chain, where it rides down to your derailleur, sometimes destroying things, including frames.

Highly suggest either either using something like the srm magnet bracket if you can:

or wrapping electrical tape around where you putty/glue/doublesidedtape the magnet as backup.

Would you drill in the bottom of the frame to install that ?

Looks like it fits under where the bottom bracket cable guide goes. Not sure it all bikes have those though.

Thanks guys. I ended up first trying some putty from the hardware store, but on the P3 the clearance is so tight that the magnet got sucked out of the putty. So then I found out that there is a hot glue gun lying around the house on account of it being acquired by my wife around 6 years ago for an elementary school project for my son, which is find of what this turned into.

Attempt one failed due the tight clearance. The magnet is on the frame, but needs to sit in the recessed area of the quarq spider. If it is too far out, it hits the “wall” of the recess and it will get knocked off. So try number 2 I moved it closer to the spindle and all was fine. Took it out for test ride and no problems. Damon Rinard also responded to me saying that on the P3, you should use Quarq’s newer “low stack magnets”. I am assuming I have an older high stack one, thus the “trial and error” science project work. I like the look of this SRM magnet mounting hardware, but unsure if it would get close enough to the “sensor ring” inside the quarq recessed area.
