I came across a really good deal on a used pair of Ritchey Carbon Wheels - under $1000 for front and rear. How does the quality compare to actual Zipp 404s or Hed Jets or even Alps? My big race this year is Lake Placid so climbing is a primary concern and I’m a bit heavier (185) than the average rider so would I need to get Zipp Clydesdales anyway?
Now you’ll want to confirm this information since it is a bit old, but…
I beleive the rim used on the Ritchey carbon was contract made for Ritchey by Zipp- again, confrim that please. The hub quality is darn nice as is the build quality. I found the wheels a bit more laterally flexible than I may have prefered but they have luxurious ride comfort. If you find these at a discount they are nice wheels.
I have been riding my pair for a few years and they have been great. That is when I can steal them away from my wife. I’m not a big guy (155lb) so I don’t notice any flex at all. They are as true today as the day I bought them and the hubs spin like buttah. I too got mine on a pro deal for $800 and don’t regret the day I got them at all. As far as who makes them, I don’t know about now, but mine were made by zipp (rims) and assembled by ritchey (hubs nd spokes). (2004)
They are very good wheels, you can get them new for $1060.00 new from Gotta Ride Bikes.
I have done LP twice the wheels would be fine.IMO LP does not have climbs but a few spots with good incline stay in the seat stuff.
The three places I remember were, past the ski jump heading up to the down hill to Keene. Then in Jay heading up to Wilimington and then out and back section there is a short hill coming back.
Make sure if you get new or used wheels you ride them a few times to sure they are race ready.
Plan " B "depending how often you need “race wheels” look at Race Day Rental wheels(about 150.00)
Get up there ride them a little Thrus & Fri. and you are good to go.
