I looked on the NAS site and saw that you can qualify for IM races. It seems like 40-50 spots are available for the individual races. Has anyone taken advantage of this? I assume you have to win your age group. If someone accepted a Kona or a 70.3 championship spot can you still take the IM spot or does that roll down?

I don’t think there is a standard way to award the slots to IMNA races. I believe it is up to the RD to hand them out. In most cases it is a NAsports race, but not all.
I have seen lotteries, by finishing times and even just handed out to anyone who wants one. I know one person who had a friend pick up a slot for them and they didn’t even race the event.
With all the North American IM races filling, I expect the qualifying slots to be in more demand now.
