Qualified for 70.3 World Champs

Im so stoked! Although it was roll down, and as 25th on my age group, I took the spot to go to the 70.3 World Champs in Canada.
Race Report here!

That’s a heck of a roll-down. I’m guessing it’s due to the international travel. I don’t think all the North American 70.3’s will go that deep.

Nice job on the PR. 20 minutes is pretty huge.

really cool. Congrats man!

Great race report also.

Just wait till it moves to Europe and Asia. They wont be able to give away slots.

You mean they will struggle to give away slots at American 70.3s. I imagine that European qualifiers for the 2015 WC will not roll down very far if at all. By rotating the championship the participation rates from various countries will merely shift. The 70.3 WC, and WTC, will be just fine.

Oh they will. And I’ll be taking them

Yes, I was referring to the US races. And of course WTC will be just fine. My point being if you are 7:00 hour 70.3 finisher in the USA, the next 2 years is your time to qualify for a world championship.

Depends on your age group. I’ve been to Clearwater and Vegas grabbing the first roll down in my age. In the M55 and up there is typically only one slot to begin with. It won’t roll that much farther. In the younger age groups where there are more slots and a lot of folks have younger families, then yes, it is likely to roll 3 to 4 times farther, and there will be a few that go waaaaay down. Bottom line…if you want to go to Europe then don’t pass on the roll down.

Depends on the race…

Taiwan 70.3 in November…I was 9th in my AG with over 300 competitors, 7 slots allocated, I got the last roll-down as many were stoked to get a spot. This race REALLY favored the runners as the swim was cancelled due to high seas from a typhoon, so it was a 6km run bike run duathlon in epic rain for the first half of the race…and in general, amongst Asian competitors, swim is by far their weakest discipline and run is usually their strength… so a couple of the guys who finished ahead of me noted that with the swim, they’d would have had no chance finishing so strong…so perhaps they were extra motivated to make the most of their luck! (I love getting creamed by guys ten years older than me who seem to float as they run! Awesome to watch and inspiring to keep trying to improve my run!) There were quite a few people in each AG who were disappointed not to get a roll down. Rumors are getting stronger that Taiwan will be 70.3 and Ironman in 2014…Kona baby, Kona!

The deepest the roll down went was 17th or so, and that was in the youngest AG, where travel expenses would likely be an even greater barrier to competing. (That and the fact you have to pay your money right then and there, no exceptions.) WTC…certainly pay to play.

See you in Mont Tremblant!

Congratulations. I did the IMMT 140.6 in 2012 and came away with a very positive attitude regarding the whole event. Its likely that the 70.3 is basically the same course, but with a shortened swim and only one loop of the bike and run. I think that this venue will very likely become one of the most popular events on the Iron Man calendar. You have a great event to look forward to, just be sure to train for some really steep climbs on the bike (they are terraced). Also watch out for deer running across the road when you are going really fast down hill as that could really be a problem if you hit one. I saw deer on both the bike and run. Best of luck, Tim

Most locals (South Africans) do not take their 70.3 World Champ spots due to A) weak local currency vs. Dollar, B) Distance of travel and C) Race is on the other side of the season/calendar. Our season really ends on April 6th with Ironman south Africa, which is what everyone here peaks to, and in September most of us are just getting our season started again. I had already schedule IM South Africa in April, IM Frankfurt in July so Worlds was just another 8 weeks of additional training to keep me going. I am not affected by the weak currency as I am an expat and earn in GBP, and the travel is not a major issue as I use it as an opportunity to see new places. At the end of the day, the reason most locals do not go is because of the weak local currency, and that will remain the same regardless of where the WC take place in the coming years. Moral of the story?.. If you are competitive in your AG. come to IMSA 70.3 if you want a better shot at a slot!

Congrats on qualifying!

Similar situation in Australia. Mont-Tremblant and previously Florida are about as far away as you can get. Vegas is/was a bit easier.

Several of our 70.3 slots have had 25 or 30 slots. Roll down ceremony goes something like: “hands up if you want a slot?”. Often less hands then slots. Rarely more than 40 people there interested in going.

LOL, that’s how it was last year, and I would have gone with a 45 place on my AG but I didn’t bother going to the ceremony. A few months later in the pool a chap told me he had qualified and he had finished 10 minutes later than me! There was no way I was going to miss the ceremony this year after that experience!

I think it depends. MT isn’t a whole lot farther of a travel distance from folks from the Mississippi on east, and a LOT more appealing than Vegas IMO. Hell, Vegas is near the bottom of my list of places I’d want to race at. You have pretty solid travel expenses either way.

Congratulations! That’s great!
