So I crashed hard on my mountain bike over July 4th, having the outside of my quadriceps sustain a large blow with a tree. Lots of swelling immediately occurred, and was no longer able to bend my knee past 90 degrees.
Initial diagnosis by the doc. was a massive contusion and hematoma, with little chance of broken bones since I can place weight on the injured leg. I can walk but find myself wanting to keep the leg straight, and avoid placing extra weight on the leg going up or down stairs.
Currently, the majority of the swelling has gone down and when attempting to flex from a straight leg position I see a noticeable indentation where the muscle should be with a slight bulge a little higher up. I still cannot get enough strength or ROM to do a full pedal stroke on the bike. I’m thinking some type of serious rupture…anyone with previous experience think I am doomed to surgery, or is there still a chance of PT and massage?
I’m a pretty young guy in my 20’s, who’d like to pedal the bike and run and swim again…
I plan to go back to the doc this week and hopefully on to a specialist after that, but just wanted to get a better idea of my expectations.
Thanks for any advice!
