QP: Hand Paddles when swimming?

How many of you use hand paddles when training?

Do you have any pros or cons about using them?

I used some small flat paddles last year and they were a big help in building some arm strength quickly and correcting some of my hand entry problems. Personally, I’d warm up for at least a half-hour before using them – they can be very hard on your shoulders if you’re not used to them. Start with short sets with rest between. And don’t try to go out all hard-core with 200 sprints and stuff.

Be very careful and start with small paddles. I tore my shoulder using them :frowning: Otherwise, they are great to build shoulder strength.

Yes, like the others have already said be careful and start with smaller paddles. My recommendation: www.strokemakers.com.

Yes, of course. Short answer = Paddles give you the opportunity to increase your specific strength in the water.

A big con: unless you have already very good swimming technique, using paddles can lead to shoulder injuries.

They can be useful for good swimmers, but are not necessary if your stroke still needs significant improvement.
