just installed used rotor q-rings on a used force crank. install went fine however i am no serious wrench. i am running it with a used chain (used about 1500 miles).
problem - when shifting from big ring to small the chain frequently gets stuck between the two with out catching any teeth. how do i fix this?
new chain? rotor says to use a new chain
adjust FD? i think it is perfectly adjusted now
i just tried a longer and newer chain and it shifts the same. i’d say 1 in 5 shifts from the big to small ring will result in the chain dropping between the rings.
is thre a chance you have installed the outside chainring backwards? its supposed to have pins sticking towards teh inside to keep the chain from falling through- do you have it installed with the pins facing the outside?
A few things to try: make sure the inner ring is installed correctly; ie-the recess for the chainring bolts should be facing the bike make sure the derailleur is returning far enough on the inside so it does not get stuck in between but rather travel all the way to the inner ring (without falling inside of course); release some cable tension, or adjust the set screw for this one check the chain with a chain checker. if the chain is too stretched out, shifting is definitely going to be an issue, especially if the rings are not worn out if none of the above help, try to angle the back of the derailleur cage inward about 1-2 mm so it pushes the chain further in
I hope this helps,

Thanks for the ideas. I plan to work on this more in the morning. I can tell already that my pedal stroke will be more efficient with the q-rings. However I can’t offer anything quantitative yet. I just need to get the shifting fine tuned.
While I’m no pro wrench, I do all my own mechanical work and have build/rebuild a few bikes so I’m not a total fool when it come to this stuff.
i think i have it shifting great now. i just needed to angle the FD a bit more. rode the trainer for 40 min with no shift problems. thank you for the help. now i can’t wait to go ride!
