PT Barnum was absolutely spot on

Words fail me. They really do.

I thought this thread was going to be about newtons…

Wow.

Folks are going to have fun with this one. Let the games begin.

I wonder if they are counting on a secondary market for that…

Heh… the coworker that sent me the link was just in my office, and his comment was “Isn’t that the best handjob trainer you’ve ever seen?”

Agreed. At risk of putting too fine a point on it, it was HL Mencken:

“No one in this world, so far as I know — and I have researched the records for years, and employed agents to help me — has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby.”

It’s an often misattributed quote.

Actually, I was referring to the quote “There’s a sucker born every minute”, although it appears that is not quite accurate either (Although it isn’t Mencken, I knew his quote)

Ummm. at least it’s less offensive than the tv ad for the Wiping Stick?

Oh…my…god…

I’d never heard of it so I googled it. There is absolutely no hope for our country. None.

Your coworker is a genius…you have to listen to this one.

At least to me … that was damn funny.

The misquote version of the above that I’ve most heard of is “Nobody ever went broke, underestimating the intelligence of the American people”

I have travelled extensively through the US of A, (42 of the 51 states, including Canada LOL) and contrary to many people outside the US, I like Americans as a whole. However, I must admit that they are often guilty of less than ‘Rocket Surgeon’ IQ (based on their choices at least). Americans in general are at least as stupid as people outside America!

As an example, just last week, I returned from 3 weeks travelling in SE Asia. I was amazed at their ingenious solutions to transport problems, and this is particularly illustrated by 2 points.

  1. Many many Americans see that an SUV is a suitable chioce for travelling back and forth to work. Sure, an SUV will work, but it’s not the most suitable choice.

  2. In Hanoi last week, I was travelling from the airport and getting near our downtown hotel (in a TINY taxi), I saw one guy holding a bike, while two other guys loaded a full sized refrigerator onto the rear carrier. They fastened it securely with about 5 old bike inner tubes. The second guy got onto the bike while the other two steadied it. Third guy gives a push and the guy was off to get the fridge repaired. Hanoi has 4 million or so, people I think, and I heard that they have over 3 million motorbikes/scooters. Based on traffic, I would certainly believe it.

Now I commute to work on my bike, with a rear carrier, and I’ve loaded some pretty funny things on the back, but the full sized fridge has got to be a record for a push bike as far I as know. I also saw a family of live pigs in a cage on the back of a 100cc scooter! A huge dead pig was also seen on the back. A mother and 4 of her kids, all on one scooter? Sure, seen that too. At the Ethnicity Museum I saw a loaded up bike, used until the owners death in 1999, with over 200 bamboo fish traps strapped to it. Top of the pile was well over 10’ above the ground. I have no idea how the guy could see where he was going as there was at least 40 strapped to the handle bars!

Falling for snake oil salesmans wild claims does seem like an American passtime however. There is not much hope for the USA I think.

Have a great day, and ride your bike

Do you remember the “Abdominizer” from the late 80’s or around then? It was a plastic shell that you laid on and it was supposed to give you a six pack for doing a half dozen sit ups a day. I actually knew the guy that developed that. Haven’t seen the guy for years, but if anybody proved PT Barnum right, it was him.

Ummm…ok…I get it AMERICA SUCKS…FUCK…YOU.

You are right about the SUV…only an idiot would drive that to work when there are cars like the Audi S8 and the Porsche 911 Turbo out there. Myself, if I had to do it all over again I would take a Hummer H1 to work so that I could just drive over the fucktards in their electric POS death rides.

“No one in this world, so far as I know — and I have researched the records for years, and employed agents to help me — has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby.”

Coulda been Obama

Relax grasshopper!

There are lots of great things about America. Most of the people are cool, the geography is great, and America invented triathlon, so can’t be all bad.

The SUV choices etc aren’t great and the US governments apparent love of charging around the globe, beating the crap out of third world countries isn’t exactly inspired or neighbourly, but that doesn’t make “AMERICA SUCK”.

I don’t profess to know it all, but I have been around (the USA and other parts of the world) a bit so that does give me some insight to comment on some things about different places around the world, including the USA.

From an historical perspective, particularly given the current economic situation, it would not surprise me at all if Americas place at the top of the heap doesn’t have much time left. There are striking similarities between The USA and past Empires, including the Roman Empire. The excesses currently displayed by the majority of Americans (compared to the poverty etc, in other countries) is very similar to Rome before the collapse of their Empire. I can’t say it will happen next week or next year, but I don’t think it can be too far off. This is particularly given the rise of countries like China.

America doesn’t suck, and it’s not the evil Empire incarnate, but given the choices and lifestyles of many Americans, it does make an easy target for some good natured ribbing. Enjoy the good natured banter moneydog59, and try to be a bit more eloquent and pithy than a knee jerk reaction “FUCK…YOU” next time and we can all have a good discussion about the pro’s and con’s of a particular subject.

Go Lance!

Abdominzer!

I still have one still! I picked it up at a garage sale for like $1, fully intending to use it. It’s currently under the bed in the spare room, along with my free weights, all much heavier now, what with the accumulation of dust!
