PSA: Sig 227 FDE

On sale for a smoking 699, don’t go to Gander Mountain. If I hadn’t bought so many presents for the kids, this would be mine now.

For an idiot.
What’s so nice about this model, and how would you compare it to compact 1911s. Any thoughts on the Colt Defender verse this? The price on the Sig looks good. Thanks.

Or compared to the Ruger SR1911. http://www.ruger.com/products/sr1911/models.html

Damn. That’s a good deal. I just ordered one for Bull_Tinkle and one for Boner Idol.

It is basically a high capacity version of the 220. One of the most tested gun models out their and known to be the most accurate out of the box. It is new. While I’m a big fan of the 220, I don’t know why this hasn’t taken off. The price point is good. I think if given the choice between 8 rounds in a 220 vs 10 in the 227, people go with tried and true. The dimensions are immaterially different, and 2 rounds of .45 doesn’t change the weight significantly. This gun has made me consider buying a domestic made sig.

To answer your question about this vs a 1911. In my opinion, the 1911 is not appropriate for most people inexperienced with guns. It is a single action that must be charged with a safety on to be effective in defense. This is a double action/single action gun with a hammer. So you can safely chamber a round and keep it holstered, without the anxiety of having a 1911 with the hammer cocked or a glock. The first trigger pull is substantial, but everyone after is a single action on part with a 1911 (not quite the same feel as far as reset) but trigger weight.

The 9mm version of this (p226) is issued to Navy SEALS.

I knew YOU would appreciate that. Man I wish I could buy one.

I like this.

How do you get one if you are in SC? Do you need a local FFL?

Yes. Palmetto (and any online gun dealer) will only ship to an FFL holder. Once you order, you or your FFL dealer emails a copy of the FFL to Palmetto. Palmetto then will only ship to the address on the FFL. The FFL holder does the background check and transfer the firearm to you after the applicable waiting time.

EDIT TO ADD: If you are in SC, alternatively, you can go into their shop and buy direct. You will fill out the paperwork in the shop, have the background check, and wait the requisite time. Then you can pick up the handgun. Here are their locations: http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/palmetto-state-armory-store-locations

To me, this is where it gets a little frustrating. The purpose of the waiting period (2 days for handguns in WI) is (a) to allow time for the background check and (b) a cool off period to ensure you are not getting the gun to commit a crime. Well, I purchased a handgun from Gunbroker last month. It was an auction, so, I waited about 3-4 days to win the bid. Then I had to send a money order to the seller. Then, my FFL dealer had to send his FFL to the seller’s FFL holder. Finally, the handgun was shipped and arrived at my local FFL dealer. That entire process took over 3 weeks. You cannot start the gun transfer paperwork until the firearm is in the hands of your local FFL dealer. So, I went to his home shop and filled out the paperwork. The background check is done by phone and instantly cleared.

By this point – (1) I had cleared the background check and (2) I had waited nearly 4 weeks for the handgun. But, I still had to wait the requisite 48 hours and make another trip to my FFL dealer to pick up the gun 2 days later. WHY???

Dumb.

Thanks for the info. You perfectly answered my bad question. I meant to say “not” in SC.

Palmetto State is in SC. But, yes. Find a local gun dealer or somebody with an FFL, buy from them and have your gun dealer contact them. They will fax their FFL.

Ahh, ok. Well first make sure this gun is legal where you intend to transfer. It says right there this is not a California or Massachussets compliant gun. So they will not ship there. But I’m sure Chicago, Washington DC, New York, and Connecticut might be off limits.

JSA,
Could you get a concealed carry permit and dodge the wait time, at least? Here in NC, if you have a CCP, you can walk in and purchase any pistol and walk out with it. For a transfer from PSA to a local FFL, you just go to the FFL when it arrives and pick it up after they finish with the paperwork.

Unfortunately, no. WI was the 49th state to allow concealed carry, which just passed about 2 years ago or so. I know there are a few states that allow CCW holders to by-pass the wait times. I have pushed for that in WI, but, no one in the legislature has any interest in changing anything.

Here is my favorite stupid story: I bought a Beretta Px4 Storm. On my second trip to the range, something in the trigger broke (cannot recall what it was). Brought it back to the store. Store sent it back to Beretta. They could not fix it, so, they shipped me a new gun. Shipped it to the store. Well, when it arrived, I had to complete the paperwork and have the background check then wait 2 days. I also had to pay the $15 for the background check, but, the store reimbursed me for it. How freak’n stupid was all of this??? I was w/o this gun for 6 weeks, then had to do all the paperwork again and make a second trip to the store after 48 hours to pick up the gun. Dumb!

Now I know it wasn’t an issue for you, but what if you were a single female parent with a stalker or abusive ex husband?

I’m not following. You mean, what if my Beretta was purchased for my personal protection and I had to send it back and be w/o protection for 6 weeks? Yeah, that is a pretty big deal! That makes for an interesting legal question – would the gun manufacturer bear any liability if the owner was attacked during the period in which the gun was at the manufacturer? It would be a stretch, but, I could see the argument. Beretta admitted the trigger was defective. So, they sold me a defective product that they knew or should have known was purchased for personal protection, then failed to supply me with a replacement in a timely manner. Interesting …

Well the six weeks sounds long but based on capacity to finish something. But the wait periods are made up by politicians for safety. If somebody were harmed while it was in possession of the gun shop can we blame the govt?

No waiting period for shotguns.

No wait period for any guns in Delaware, but they are trying hard to making us into the next NJ.

We do have a rather long wait to get a CCW. So I have heard of women being stalked who open carry while they wait for their CCW.
