Pro's conditioning work

How much and what type of conditioning work do the long course pro’s do?

Care to elaborate on what you mean by “conditioning”?

My wife and I do conditioning work at least three times a week

I shampoo and condition at least that much, and I’m not even a pro.

I was thinking core and strengthening work mainly non Swim, Bike or run sessions. I know that alot use Paddle swims, big gear rides and hill runs - is this enough or do they do other sessions?

I’m not a pro, but big gear rides and hill runs help me a lot with the strength aspect, I also like to do “intervals” on climbs where I drop into a harder gear that only lets me pedal 30-40 rpm and do a few minutes, recover, repeat.

Did you go for shorter higher frequency session’s when you were mainly racing short course  ?

Before I saw who posted this I thought you were being cheeky…

swimming cyclng running…distance varies

ohh you mean weights

I can leg press 150 lbs and bench 115

Not necessarly just weights - running drills and Plyometrics , yoga/pilates type exercises, swiss ball work etc. Some of club members were commenting on how Luc Van Lierde looked like he had done so serious strength condition work as he almost looked like a body builder.

I’m with Zack. I can hardly leg press the machine with no weights. The one time I did leg curls and extensions this year I think I did 30lbs and that was with both legs! I wish that I had more time to do weights plyos or other stuff but I don’t.
I don’t even stretch after most workout. If I have an extra 15 minutes I am usually extending the run/bike/swim and rushing to get back to work. Not that I recomend this.

Who does the work is the question Simon

I could reply to that, but I would get banned.

naturally high hematocrit levels…

Wha? How much do you weigh?

Luc Van Lierde went on to clock the fastest Ironman Triathlon ever in 1997, doing 7:50:27 (0:44, 4:28, 2:36, plus transition) in Ironman Europe.

I’m not sure what body builders you’ve seen but he looks like any other AGer whose seen the inside of a gym.

I didn’t see him so cannot comment - one of the girls from our club told me. - she seemd quite excited about it  .

I am guessing she meant he had more muscle definition than she expected (well probably compaired to us skinny runts in our club) - the bodybuilder bit was just to overephasise the fact. I expect it might pretty hard to come 2nd in Lanzarote if you were built like Arnie.

I wish I had a GF for weekly conditioning work. My workout recovery was better when i did.

Regarding weights, depends what type of program you follow. Some do no weights, just core work 2-3x per week. Others follow a periodized program where weights are are lifted throughout the entire year. Others just do plyometric type stuff…some do it 3x per week when training stress isn’t too high.

FWIW - 2 years ago I could only squat 185 8x…this last winter I followed Friel’s plan and built to squatting 305 6x over the winter. I didn’t notice any difference in my performance this season because of it. Maybe I should focus on the bench press next time around

Are those freestanding, real barbell squats? That’s a nice gain.

You may not have noticed a performance boost (because there may not have been one) but you may have noticed an increase in recovery time. I am convinced that is my one saving grace in this sport - I recover fast, rarely get injured, and recover fast from injuries - due to muscle built from an agressive weight training program.

They are free weight squats. I came from a lifting background(even though 305 is my highest weight squatted 6x to date). The fact that I had lifted intensly in the past may have helped me there.

Anyway, I do think that my ligament/tendon strength did improve. Just didn’t see a significant increase in the watts being put out. I do keep weights in my program 1-2x per week and will probably continue to do so.
