Pros and cons of buying a used PT

Is it worth the price difference? I was thinking about picking up a new road frame, but now I’m wondering if I’d rather put the money toward the watts rather than the frame. Can’t get both.

I just bought a used PT 2.4SL (wireles, but, not the ANT+) version off the Classifieds. Great deal. One year old. Good condition. Saved about $600+ off the new price. Well worth it.

For $100, you can purchase an adapter for the 2.4SL than turns it into the ANT+ version.

Assuming you get one in good condition w/ about a year of use, it is a great deal. I do not see any down side, again, assuming you bought it from someone who took care of it.

If you buy one that is so old that it is not the modern version, and you have to send it in to get serviced/repaired, they won’t repair it. They will only upgrade you to the modern version since they phased out the parts. Had to upgrade two wheels earlier this year.

I’ve bought both new and used. If you get some honest history on the used wheel, etc. it’s an okay deal.

I’ve purchased 2 used ones in the last two years. One racing, one training. It has worked out very well.

Wired PTs are pretty cheap new these days. Actually, really cheap.

I bought a new PT because I didn’t want to have to hassle with any troubleshooting issues. Now that I am familiar with the technology, I might consider getting a used one if I decide that I need one more.

i bought a used powertap. seller said everything was great with it-worked good. got it, came with everything as promised but did not work so well. changed the batteries out, did all the trouble shooting and in the end ending up having to send the wheel in- got tht back worked briefly and then had to send the computer in and now it works great. from what i have heard though i guess things have changed with saris cs since then. when i was dealing with them they were very nice, fixed everything for free, and never asked if i had bought the pt used. one of the guys in the call center (?) even remembered from a few months earlier that i had sent my wheel in and the repair it had done.

I bought a PTPro, got it, used it, all was good.

3 months later, it stopped working and as Saris no longer services PTPros, I was out of luck (other than upgrading via the trade-in program)

It wasn’t worth it at all for me- but that is the way it goes when you buy used… there is going to be some inherent uncertainty. If you are getting a model that is new enough that Saris will keep supporting it for the foreseeable future and the seller is someone you trust- yeah, it can be a great deal.
