I am curious about when I need, and may not need, to replenish fluids, calories etc after a particular workout. Obviously, if I have gone for more 2-3 hours, at an aerobic pace, one needs to replenish a certain way but, let’s say I do a shorter, more intense, interval oriented workout of only an hour, is recovery nutrition as important? , necessary?, and if so, what is the proper recovery fuids, fluids etc, for a shorter duration workout. Hope I explained this well enough.
For a short/intense workout it’s not quite as critical, since the overall glycogen depletion and dehydration will be significantly less. You have ~90min. of glycogen stored in your body (that’s why no one “bonks” in a 10k). Proper recovery will leave you fresher for the next workout though. There is a roughly 30min. window after exercise when the body will replete glycogen stores faster, so when you get inside have a quick hi-carb snack (I do a Dr Pepper, but a bagel works too). Depending on sweat rate, you might have a liter or two of water to put back, but that probably won’t require any special plan.
like the previous poster said, recovery is all about the next workout, not the previous one. So yes, it’s important.
Having said that, a good meal of lean, high-quality proteins, whole grain carbs and healthy fats with a big glass of water right after a workout is good. If you are waiting more than 30 minutes you are too late.
Do you NEED to do it? No, but your next workout will be better if you do. Also, maintaining a good body composition is easier when you are getting high quality foods on a consistent basis, especially post workout.
Similar to the first response, taking in the “recovery nutrition” soon after the workout is important. The first half hour is ideal but that “window” is open (more or less) for a couple of hours. Obviously, the sooner the better. The recovery nutrition should be as close to a 4-1 ratio of carbs to protein (by weight) as possible as this ratio is utilized by your body better than other mixtures. There are a lot of recovery drinks available but a simple, easy to find and relatively inexpensive one is Slim Fast. One can for the shorter, intense workouts or two for longer workouts, etc.
