"But what if we gave an 44 year-old age grouper with a 50 hour per week job the same weapons as a pro athlete: nutritional advice, an outstanding but still affordable bike (not some dream-like prototype) some excellent (but again findable and affordable) food supplements, facilities to train all year round, a coach …

Would this age grouper then be able to distinguish himself and to stand out of the pack and to get himself noticed? Would this once average recreational athlete be able to defeat (one or two) pros ??? That’s what we’re going to find out over the course of the next year."

Not enough info. The athlete would not be able to do this if they were Joe Plumber off the couch as a weekend warrior, too many hurdles to overcome in a year. Weight, technique, base, knowledge, experience. They’d have to be a pretty good age grouper at that age to make up & get to a pro level. If you mean “nutritional & food supplements” are reference to those of the pro cyclist’s & esp. Team Festina/Astana of past years, then yes, it could be done. But one year is a long way to go for Joe Plumber to be beating pros without some kind of high level background in one or more of the sports. IMO of course…
