I am so sad!!! I was having more and more trouble shifting, then I looked at the shift ring, it looked pretty worn out. I have only about 15,000 miles on it. I can remove the shift ring and use it as a friction shifter (which is what I am planning on doing for the time being), but I want to find a long-term solution.
Here are the plans:
a) find out if I could not possibly get a new nine speed shift ring, whether from a machine shop or Profile. I doubt Profile has shift rings lying around, but you never know, do you?
b) See how much the Cat Carbon Bikes-modified 9 speed Grip Shift is, and if it’s worth paying for.
c) Go with (ugh!) bar-end shifters. This is the least favourite option, and I would rather exhaust every other option before going with plan C. I have nothing against bar-ends, but I like the twist-shifting better.
Anyone know of anybody who might possibly have a pair of 9 speed Shimano UPS lying around?
Could you get bar-end shifters and modify them with carbon? Maybe grind down the lever a little bit and wrap it with carbon, maybe even in some sort of aero shape? They wouldn't work any better, but they sure would look super cool!
Keith, I have wanted UPS for my Campag 10 speed for some time, but have been advised that they couldn’t have it modified to 10 spd. However, the friction option was not suggested, how would this work differently and have would it differ in use. I assume that it would not be indexed and that’s it, am I right?
Bunny seems to indicate there is a friction option, and it would not be indexed, as you observed.
But I don’t know for sure that these can be used in friction mode.
Maybe Bunny, or anyone else, can answer this question?? Bunny mentioned ‘possibly’ using these in 9-speed friction mode, but I don’t know if that would also work for 10-speed.

I have a pair of never used (or so the seller told me…they look new) ones sitting in my basement I could sell you. Had planned on putting them on one of my tri bikes but never got around to switching from STI. I could even throw in a pair of Grip Shift 8 speeds that I have as a freebie. All I have is the shifter ends/clamps etc…no cables or anything. Let me know if you’re interested and we’ll work out a price (certainly not the $90 in the above ad link)
I have used them in friction mode before this, mainly to make the front mech work better. But, since I don’t run a front mech these days, I only use one shifter. My friction works fine on the stand for the rear mech.
I just can’t see me doing that, as shifters are so small and the tolerances are so tight. I would be more likely to do something if I had a mill or a lathe with aluminium.
Bartol system is great, though I would not use it on a road bike; only a tri bike.
It works on chainline. When the chain is on the second-from smallest cog, the chain goes onto the big ring. When it get to the second-from largest cog, it goes back to the small ring. It is pretty cool.
I recently picked up a brand new ups system at a cycle swap meet. Don’t think I’m going to use them and need the money for a new bike. I’ll sell them for $55 including shipping. They are new in teh box although the box is a little beat.
