Profile Design new bta bottle

Any idea when this will be available??

no pic or link?

There’s a few here. http://www.tririg.com/galleries.php?id=2014_09_Interbike_Day_1&num=41

I like that they solved the problem of using something bigger than a watch sized computer. It looks like one of the bigger Garmins would work easily on that.

I’m curious whether PD was trying to address issues with the Aero HC bottle, and if so, which issues. Personally, I like the Aero HC, although you are right that it doesn’t work well with bigger computers. My old Edge 500 fit well on the Aero HC computer mount, but my new Edge 510 doesn’t. The computer mount on the new BTA bottle doesn’t seem very aero. The rest of the bottle seems to be the same as the xlab/nathan versions.

Seems odd to me that they have gone back to a design with the bottle hanging down below the aero bars. Isn’t the general consensus that a BTA (hidden inside the arms) is the better aero option?

Torhans hung below and there’s data out there that their bottles test amongst the best.

This is probably where I’m supposed to say “show me the data” in true ST fashion. I just remember Cervelo doing some testing and stating that bottles hanging down “added some drag”, whereas “a standard round bottle mounted horizontally between the rider’s arms was a revelation! It filled in the turbulent area behind the rider’s hands and actually reduced the drag. So this set up was not only faster than the vertical bottle, but faster than no bottle at all!”

I’m aware that’s just one test and many factors play into each individuals situation and “aeroness” is not always the only criteria. I still use my Profile Design Aquacell for long rides into the boonies because you can’t beat 43oz of fluids in August in Texas. I would have thought since they are making two (2) sizes anyway why not make one (1) that stays up in the void of the aero bars (for aero geeks) and the larger version that you might choose for longer rides due to larger volume.
My opinion is worth what you paid for it - and no refunds either : )

the hanging bottles are beneficial for non-aero headtubes. For those that are optimized (pretty much every Cervelo), then you just want BTA. I guess this PD bottle is a good solution for the non-aero headtubes.

i thought the hanging bottle was a good option (or even faster) only if you could get the bottle close to the head tube (like starky, below), irrespective of the aeroness of the headtube itself?

The Torhans was faster on some pretty fast bike, like the SpeedConcept according to Ero sports testing. Of course this applies to the torhans and not the older profile designs. You can see the Torhans is designed to match up with the head tube and is also has a great leading edge, unlike the profile design.

But, it was not faster for everyone or every bike. It seems like so many aero things, but it dependant on many factors, like distance from head tube (closer is best, farther away and it gets worse), frame (I think they said that Bayonet style ones work best), but most interestingly handle bar config. From what they hinted at, using athletes like Starky, the ones that it works best for are ones that have extension mounted near the basebar and the base bare mounted low. This makes sense, because if you have your extension on a pedestal, this bottle would be mounted higher above the head tube, so could not interact with it. Plus when it is mounted higher, it blocks the air that would move between the extensions and the basebar, adding drag. When it works, it is a solid drop in drag.

Also Ero said that the BTA is also tricky to get right, most of their intial testing showed that it had more drag than no bottle. Eventually they figured out how to do it, but has not revealed the secrets. It seems a little more complicated than simply having your arms shield the bottle.

Not true. Chaparral’s post above is pretty much spot on.
