A few weeks back I was asking for electric shaver recommendations for my face. I decided I wanted a foil shaver and went with the Microscreen 300 (hey, Herbert gave it a thumbs up :). Went to Target to pick it up and saw the Norelco bodygroom on sale for $20, so I said “what the hell” and grabbed it. Grand total for both was ~ $50. I’ve used each about 6 times and wanted to post a review for you guys. Until these purchases I was using a Mach3 on my face, a generic mach3 on my legs, and a hair trimmer on my chest.
Microscreen 300
This little baby does the job. The built in trimmer works pretty well (could be better in sideburns, but multiple passes gets it done). You’re not going to get a “blade-close” shave, but it’ll be close. The biggest difference for me is that I am used to shaving once a week (I’m a postdoc so appearance isn’t THAT important). With this shaver it seems like it is designed to be used very frequently (3X a week or more). It took me a couple tries to realize this. The MS300 works very well on short stubble and not so well on the longer stuff. I still have to clean up the neck area with a blade but it’s not a big deal–the blades last much longer now!! I haven’t tried using the pre-shave stuff that makes your stubble stick out. Cleaning the MS300 seems pretty easy. The best part about this thing is the rechargeable battery–you can charge 24/7 and it won’t hurt the battery charge life. In other words, it’s always fully charged everytime you use it. Noise isn’t too bad, but I wouldn’t use it while the gf was sleeping.
Norelco bodygroom
I didn’t what to expect from this thing. It’s shaped like and oversized razor and looks undersized relative for the tasks that it can supposedly perform. Well, it works just fine. Once again, you’re not going to get a “blade-close” shave, but I find it very close. One big plus is that it works both wet and dry. I now just hop in the empty tub and start shaving, then shower off. Clean-up is easy. No more cuts is nice too
The biggest drawback of this thing is the fact that you have to run the batteries all the way down before re-charging if you want to keep the battery life long. This is fine and I understand it, but they don’t have a “battery level” indicator on the bodygroom, so you have to guess (based on a 50minute charge-life) when you’re low. Not a big deal if it dies, as you can just grab a blade and finish the job. Works fine on chest hair as well. Doesn’t seem to mind longer hairs too much, but it is trimmer-based, so it shouldn’t.
Overall I’m happy with these 2 purchases so far. I’m cleaning them after each use in an effort to keep them working well. The shaves I get from both have gotten the gf’s seal of approval, so they can’t be that bad. I should mention that I’m not sponsored by either of these companies and am not receiving any compensation for these reviews (I know you guys are a cynical bunch ![]()
