I have been waiting for an X-Lab rear disc from my lbs for quite some time now. Nothing to compare with the P3 wait that others have endured, but nonetheless, I ordered a tri-spoke and disc in mid-April. Was told I would have them in time for an Oly in May. Got the front tri-spoke, no disc. LBS has been kind enough to let me use their X-Lab rear tri-spoke for the time being.
But my frustration is more that I keep getting excuses and promises of shipments within days only to follow-up with the lbs and find out that nothing has come in. So, I am just curious if anyone else has had such a difficult time getting wheelsets from these guys. Tom? Bueller? Anyone?
I am about ready to scrap the whole order and have the lbs send back my used tri-spoke to the distributor who keeps coming up with the stories. Not sure what I would go with as an alternative, but anything to avoid another week of anticipation followed by frustration and no disc. I would appreciate any input. Besides that my seatpost is too low, I already know that.
As a dealer, this is how I rate wheelsets, Zipp, HED, XLAB. XLAB struggles with poor supply. It’s not your LBS lieing to you. Move up the chain. HED is never more than 2-3 weeks out and they are honest about their deliveries. Zipp… you just can’t get any better! Top Notch!!
The Renn discs are nice but we were talking about customer service and no one beats Zipp.
I recently ordered a set of Z4s for a customer and when they came in I was not 100% satisfied with the rear bearings. I called and they overnighted me another whole axle so that we did not need to figure out which specific bearing I was unhappy with. I sent them the other back ground. The Z4 axle bearing is an expensive little jewel and it was a no questions asked, be there tomorrow (Saturday BTW) type of thing.
Super nice folks making the best products out there and pushing the envelope that others follow. I clasify HED in this group as well but no other wheel company - at least for us. I have not given Dave Bunce at Blackwell Research a good chance to shine yet FWIW but believe that he will be in this group as well.
Blackwell wheels are made by ZIPP as are the new Bontrager disc. If you thought the '03 404’s where a stiffer wheelset than the new models, you can pick up the Blackwell set and save some bucks. When it comes to support, I’m sure that Blackwell will stand behind the wheels and you know that Zipp will be in the loop. - Just my thoughts… never had a problem to test the system!
