Did Steelhead this past weekend, my first HIM and last big race before IMOO, though I have the Dairyland Dare, a relay, and a sprint coming up, so still some time to iron out the kinks. Of course, as is par for my Schleprockian existence, I had a couple of problems with things that have never given me problems before:
Hot foot on the RUN. I had hot foot/pain on the bike once, 4 hours into a ride on a very hot day, but I’ve never had anything like that happen while running. My feet were burning and in serious pain from the very beginning of the run - anyone have any ideas on what might cause this? And if there’s anything I can do if it happens again in the future? I basically just sucked it up and kept “running” (snail’s pace), but boy, it would truly suck if that happened at IMOO.
Peeing constantly on the 2nd half of the run. I read somewhere recently where someone said this was symptomatic of…something, but of course I don’t recall what. I wasn’t drinking too much - maybe not enough sodium/electrolytes? Something off balance? My ride took 3 hours, during which I had 1 bottle of Infinit, 1 water with a Nuun, 1 GEF, 1 GU, and half a banana, which I grabbed because my legs seemed to be cramping from the get-go. On the run, I’d get a cup of water and/or a Gatorade at each aid station. Didn’t seem excessive, but halfway through, I had to stop to pee at every aid station - and even if I had just gone, if I then took a sip of water/Gatorade, I’d immediately have to go again.
Anyone know what would cause this? Has never happened before either.
I think u drank too little while on the bike and made up for it on the run. This probably would have resulted in too much fluid intake on the first half of your run, and it just got flushed out of your system.
Thanks for the response. I suppose I did drink more than i usually do when I run, since I’m not usually surrounded by aid stations. Though, I’m sure I drank as much on the run at Evergreen Lake (an olympic), and didn’t have this problem. Ah well, I’ll continue to experiment with my long rides/runs and see what happens.
And because you were kind enough to take the time to respond, please PM me and I will send you a batch of my world-famous brownies. Seriously. Thanks!
Sounds like too little fuel on the bike. Are you a sweater? Persosnally I get real bad in the heat because I sweat alot of salt. Also, what did you eat/drink the 2 days before? I read that hydration takes a couple of days to take effect, so if you were not careful in the days before you may have sewed the seeds of failure right there.
Again about fuel on the bike. I drink a custom blend of the Infinit crack, but I bumped up the electrolytes and the protein. I drink at least 3.5 bottles (@ 350 cal each) on the bike supplemented with water. I tend to have a hard time with the gels so I may be a little high with the liquid nutrition on the bike. I save the gels for T2 but usually have a bit of walking to do to get my legs on the run.
I’m pretty sure that the rule is 300 or so cals an hour on the bike, but i don’t recognize some of what you were eating. I’ve had the burning feet before, and think it is caused by an electrolyte deficiancy. Now I take the electrolyte caps (pills) and that seems to help.
Also, my first 1/2 was hot and I was terribly undertrained for the run and ended up with swolen ankles along with the burning feet. Is it possible that you need to do more runing to prepare for IMOO?
Could be sand - though I did take the time to wipe off my feet in T1. And the running shoes are pretty new - I sized up and they feel pretty good. Not that I’m trying to dismiss your ideas - I might try out my old running shoes for tomorrow’s brick, see if that makes a difference.
I do tend to sweat a lot, and I’ve come to realize that I can get electrolyte imbalanced pretty easily. I always used to get headaches after playing hockey or working out, and thought it was dehydration, then someone told me it was probably electrolytes. And when I run, even if it’s for just an hour, I tend to smell ammonia, indicating a lack of…something. The Nuun has been helping though. I probably didn’t eat/drink enough the couple of days beforehand, either - have been trying to get my carbs from fruit/vegetables, probably cutting the carbs a bit too much.
The GEF I alluded to was the Gatorade Endurance they were giving out on the course. I’ve been sticking with 200 calories per hour on the bike, which has worked out fine, but I think maybe because I was pushing myself more than usual at a continual effort (i.e. no stops, etc.), I needed to adjust that upward. Interesting about the electrolyte deficiency - will also try adjusting that upwards. Do you use Endurolytes, or does it matter?
As for running, that’s definitely my weakness, and I need to continue to work on it - but I have been running 6/7 days because I know otherwise it’ll be a big sufferfest. So I’m not undertrainer for a half, but the weak running skills could also be a factor.
Anyway, thanks for the suggestions - I’m going to make some adjustments on my long ride/run tomorrow, see how that works.
how hot was it? I strongly hold to 1 bottle/hour on the bike, more if you’re a big sweater. Eat a bit more on the bike as well. watch your electrolites and play around with etabs during your training.
It wasn’t too hot on the bike, just got hot on the run. I remember thinking that I wasn’t sweating a ton on the bike. I’m going to be riding the Madison course tomorrow and it’s supposed to be very hot, so I’m going to try my usual bottle per hour but add electrolytes and/or calories, see how that goes. Thanks!
I have had the same issues with some sorta new shoes. What seemed to have solved it for me was to switch from thicker socks to the thinnest socks I could find. The problems completely went away after that.
I have absolutely no idea why thick socks would do that. Perhaps they are keeping the foot wetter?

Whoa, whoa, whoa … you are planning on doing Dairyland Dare, a relay, and a sprint BEFORE IMMoo? Ah, when are you planning on tapering?
BTW, looked for you on the IMWI route on Sat, but, did not see any dino horns on any bikes.
Umm…tapering is overrated? I don’t have time to taper? All of that is part of my Grand Tapering Plan? Okay, so I’m planning on doing just a 2-week taper, and all that stuff is in the next 3 weeks. That should work, right? (she says, fingers crossed…)
My ferocious dino horn and I were in attendance at Steelhead, intimidating people left and right on the bike course. I’m bummed we missed the Madison ride, and an opportunity to meet his dino twin. I trust you’re leaving yours on your bike for IMMOO? After all, it would be cruel to not take little dino to the Big Dance after all his hard work all season…
I’ve been having the same problem where it feels like the balls of my feet are on fire after runs. After Racine I literally got backs of ice and just rested my feet on top of them until it felt like the fire went out. Similar problem in Muncie with different shoes. Also had the same experience today after a run in a third pair of shoes. The common denominator seems to be the socks but that also seems odd to me because I’ve been faithful to the same brand and type of sock for sometime. I was actually going to post on here as to what this might be so I’m interested in seeing what sort of suggestions people have for you.
Its from Infinit Nutrition in regards to how much calories are needed on the run. I too smell ammonia after workout session. The ammonia smell is usually very prevalent when i enter the house. And, no…! I don’t keep open containers of ammonia around the house. Anybody have any idea what the ammonia smell means…?
As far as socks, i prefer to wear very thin socks for racing. I would wear medium weight socks for regular runs only, and i make it a point to stay away from thick socks as the moisture builds up and i could end up with a blister (especially between the pinky toe and the second-to-last toe).
I would also opt to drink more on the bike than not drink enough. If you’re gonna drink more, make sure its Gatorade or some electrolyte replacement drink and not just plain water. I’d rather pee several times on the bike and run, than end up with an intraveneous needle in the medical tent.
While the Dairyland Dare is a fun ride, I’d question it’s race-specific relevance to IM Moo. You would be better served riding the MOO course with your race set-up.
