Problem(s) riding a road bike in a steep time-trial positon?

i’m riding a road bike with standard geometry in a steep 77-78 degree position. I am using a seatpost that gives me this time-trial position option. My problem has been riding on the flats and downhills - I feel like I can’t stay on my saddle at all, I keep sliding forward. My question is, irrespective of the saddle itself or my bike fit/technique, is the bike itself to blame for this? I wonder if the altered weight distribution of riding in such a forward position on a road bike might be part of the problem.

Thanks!

i doubt this feeling is from the effective seat angle/weight distribution. i rode a road bike with a fwd seat post for years and know others that did as well. yes, it may handle i bit differently due to weight distribution but that shouldn’t make you feel like you are sliding off the saddle on the flats. i would play with the saddle level and height, check the reach to the arm pads and then the effective drop, i’ll bet it’s one of those.
good luck

I don’t think it is the bike. Your saddle may be tilted downwards too much–or perhpas you are naturally seeking an even steeper position than what the seatpost/saddle is adjusted to. Maybe you need a shorter stem or push your saddle even a bit more forward. Too hard to give the exact solution with limited information.

In my experience, the compromises in handling caused by steep seatpost on conventional road bike geometry are not in straight riding, but when cornering or doing winding technical descents.

gregk23,

You maay need to shorten your “cockpit” some. You may be pulling yourself forward on your road bike to get in a more comfortable position that is easier to breath in rather than a more “stretched out” position caused by the longer top tube on a road bike.

As one steepens the seat tube angle, one also shortens the top tube. This is one of the issues that generally isn’t addressed as one tries to steepen the seat tube angle on a road bike by using a forward seat post.

Some aero bars that permit moving the arm rests and hand hold back toward the seat without moving your handlebar might help. The Profile Jammer GT bars are a good example of bars of this type.

FWIW.

Your saddle is probably pointing down too much, i have my road bike steep and i don’t have a problem with it.
