I was trying to think of my “Top 5 greatest” but entertained myself more with thinking up some of sports purely entertaining personalities.
George Foreman (comeback). Here’s a guy who realized that all the contenders were either bums or in jail and jumped at the opportunity. So he “gets into shape” by losing 40 pounds (380 to 340) and gets in the ring with a fighting style akin to a caveman. Plus, he lent his name to the George Foreman grill. And named all his sons “George.”
Eddy the Eagle Edwards.
The Jamaican Bobsled team.
William the Refrigerator Perry
Old school NFL badasses. I love watching the old NFL films, particularly the profiles of guys like Butkus, Chuck Bednarik, Lambert, Jack Youngblood, Jim Brown, etc. Guys who ate too much rare red meat and didn’t think anything of going out and getting loaded the night before a big game.
I thought of Eddie the Eagle when I saw that other thread as well. Also what about the African swimmer, don’t remember what country he was from. He swam in the Olympics at Sydney. Not a great swimmer, although he could probably kick my butt, but he still went out there and gave it his best. Good on him!

I remember this guy too, but certainly cannot remember the name. I think he swam the 500 free and finished last by a couple minutes. But he earned an “Olympic moment” with Bob Costas.

Eric the Eel, from Equatorial Guinea. I believe it was the 100free.
