Pro tri news: The good, the bad, the banter

Clearly didn’t have the same kind of Calf strain that most of us then, you know if you can hardly walk.

What?

I would say this is one the few times he was NOT being a jerk.

Oh I love this idea. Think about it. Would Ironman want to keep writing 200k checks to pros who don’t even show at the championship?

Last year Lange had a big pay day and didn’t even show. If Kat won this year without showing do you think IM would continue business as usual with the series? No changes? What if Lovseth didn’t show either.

Same could be said for KB and Kasper. Their showing up is a way for them to honor IM, in a sense.

So Mark, thinking about these things as he definitely would, if Kat said she wasn’t planning to go says, hey, just go out hard, DNF the run looking like a hero. Get a bunch of press for going for it.

Ya, that’s probably not the way it went down. But it’s a fun theory.

(The truth is, if she was that close she wouldn’t just throw it away, she’d go for the win)

Ahhhhh, I don’t think so tim … but this is why the pro series should end at Kona and your fifth score should be Kona only . Make people race it and finish no matter what .

I do think you’ve highlighted a currently problem in how the pro series works, there was still some risk here for Matthews, she needed to finish within 100 seconds or whatever if the winner was Lovseith or Lovseith was second. But Lovseith finished 6 and way further back. So the scores weren’t close enough to force a finish. At what point was the decision made to DNF, is it really a calf strain, I just have so many questions.

I have these questions because it’s convenient that the injury information is released after she stepped onto that podium and accepted a check.

Ya but she’s clearly running into 3rd. With a possibility she runs through to first if Kona happens again. Would she really give that up for just one last hard run of the season unless she had real issues. No way.

I just hope this doesn’t get the better of her and she starts having repeat issues.

Huh? The Pro Series is about season excellence not about WC wins. While being excellent in the championships has benefit it’s intentionally not the overriding factor.

Kat has dominated the series and her winning was effectively a foregone conclusion. Lovseth’s 2 scenarios to win the series were:

  • Win and Kat to not finish within 400 seconds of her
  • Finish within 100 seconds of the winner and Kat to not finish within 400 seconds of her

It was clear off the bike neither of those were going to happen without some incredible travesties to happen at the front of the race. It was also very clearly an injury, whether it was an existing one or spontaneous it’s not like she saw the gap knew she had the series in the bag and was like meh I don’t wanna finish the race so I’ll just hop a few times, limp and then pull out of the race. Though, I may not be understanding the point your trying to make though.

If Lovseith DNS then Kat DNS? Clearly the only reason she started the race was because she still had a chance to lose.

She started the race because she wanted to win the 70.3 WC, secondary benefit was to stave off the minutely small risk of Lovseth taking the Series title. Just because she had an injury doesn’t mean she didn’t think she had a chance to run through it. TO is a great example of someone who has a bad running injury yet found the legs on the day to still finish 3rd in Kona.

And yet a person above tried to say with a Calf strain you can’t walk. So…

Just looked like Business Decision to me. Which is in their right to do if they want to.

Appreciate you guys getting a pod up quickly. Great chat with plenty of good takes and plenty of trash takes.

the response to this was pretty good. still no answer.

I would like to know how to get added to the PRO AM in kona. is there an email or website.

I saw these legends looking so mortal ( out of shape) and it’s 15 years later but this might be my best shot. Patience.

The if x person was there stuff is such dumb fluff. The biggest skill /or barrier of long distance / endurance sport is staying healthy enough to keep getting gains and showing up ready.

LANGE DID BEAT JAN in 2017. it happened people, people don’t count this one but you can say your hurt or got hurt after but he beat him. yet when Jan won in 2019 we don’t say if Lange wasn’t sick.

Liked your conversation about the coverage. Another issue with Outsude is if you join while the coverage is still live you can’t immediately scroll back to the start like you can on YouTube. It was funny listening to you guys bending yourself into knots to not say “Michael Lovato”. I would 100% pay a nominal fee for better coverage. I do wonder if the commercial interruptions are pre-programmed and out if their control.

Just finished listening to the podcast. I liked it, shame Mark wasn’t on to offer his perspective on the field. And shame Pat can’t admit that Magnus’ season has been incredibly negative. He only won SA super early in the season against Van Riel that had to scramble to qualify after the issue in Cozumel and already in prep for T100 singapore and Schomburg at his first IM.

It’s a shame because he’s a great athlete, but I feel like many little things have gone wrong, and with his run level shown all year, he can’t be a contender.

Perhaps if they move to 20 meters he has a chance, racing in Rico Bogen style, but again it feels like he doesn’t have the power currently.

Totally agree with Talbot on the hypotheticals. They make 0 sense. Would love to see who genuinely though Tanja Neubert would get onto the podium.

Lastly, if IM doesn’t respond to all teh backlash on their posts this time with improving commentary/coverage, they never will.

It better be the first thing discussed at the next meeting. With a 2 sex Kona looming in 2026 they honestly just need to start from scratch.

This…and I learned an added frustration with Outside watching the race. Woke up early to watch the men’s race after they started the bike (using an iPad). Moved into the Pain Cave for some stretching and rolling, and attempted to move the race onto the big screen via app/Apple TV. Apparently, after a certain point in the race, logging onto the Outside app with basic Outside is considered a “race replay” and you have to have Outside+ for any replays. Dumb. So I just kept watching it on the iPad…glad I didn’t shut down iPad first, or I would’ve missed that amazing run battle!
