Pro Cyclist's and Power Output

After following the TT at the Giro I wonder. What is the average Norm Power Output of those guys during a TT? Of course it depends on the course. Let’s take that 7km for example. What about a TT that would last 50min?

Is that all?!?

So put in perspective. If they had an outlet to plug in can I power my Bose home theater system, flashing disco ball, and jacuzzi…

Now I’m really depressed. I can’t even generate enough wattage to power one of their legs :frowning:

Strangely enough two weeks ago I developed some intense pain in my left knee with a little over 40 miles left to return home. I decided to one-leg it home rather than calling in help. I was amazed to see that my wattage did drop much.

I’ve found more or less the same thing when doing the alternating-leg emergency “just get home” drill on Powercranks after my HF’s are fried. Not fun but it sure get’s some looks from drivers.

Greutzi,

Check out the power profiling ms excel file here: http://www.peakscoachinggroup.com/powerprofiling.html

Its pretty accurate… but guy’s like Lance & Jan are off the chart… Their 20min power is ~7 watts/kg. Sick, eh?

The fastest tri/duathletes on the bike would be just over 5 watts/kg (for 20minutes).

interesting, unfortunately the link to the excel table doesn’t seem to work. did you get a chance to look at it. did you save it? if so, could you email it to me?

thanks francois. 500-550W!! that’s insane

I had a avr of 329 and 796 max @ IM FL last year… How bout anyone else with a power meter…

Pretty sure… I put out about four and a quarter for a hilly 20k that gave me a 28:14. Your more than welcome to see the profile, run some figures, this whole power thing is very interesting, and there certainly could be errors. I emailed you the IM profile. Ok the bad news I’m not anywhere near Steve OR Lance on the power to bodyweight ratio I’m 5’10 and was about 205 at about 9% bodyfat for FL…

329 - I think thats close to Larsen’s…If I remember correctly - at one of his IM’s - heard his goal was to average/hold 350 watts for the ride. I’d like to be able to hold 150…

Dave

the weight certainly makes less difference on a flat course like florida. but 329W for an entire IM? what time did you go?

Ha… Ya my run time was slower than my bike, not because I blew up but have a pretty bad ankle injury that I really aggrevated on the bike, I could hardly stand up so I walked hobbled through the run just to finish. Truthfully I never rode with that much power for that distance but I kept my HR in aerobic range so just went with it. Like I said I felt good until I stepped off the bike and almost fell over when my left foot hit the ground… O’well that’s racing.

I use a Polar 710… Ya, I saw the comparisons, they are all pretty close… except the one that does power based only on weight and speed(not mentioning any names…

Yes, the pros certainly have the power to weight ratio advantage and that is really what it comes down to, not absolute power.

If you can hold 420 watts for a 20k, at your size (I’ve seen the pictures you’ve posted), doing the run training you currently do…why are you wasting your time doing triathlons?

Not that triathlons are a waste of course, and if you do it for fun, then that’s reason enough. If you just compete for the sake of competing, than that’s another reason. But, if your goal is to make althletics any sort of career (i.e. make money), you should be a cyclist. I’ve never seen your name on the top 10 of any major triathlon (even with the terminal bad luck I’ve heard you have). Whereas with that power/weight, which would only improve minus the run training, you could be very competitive as a pure cyclist. If your power went up to 450 for 20 minutes by focusing on cycling, you’d be in the upper half of the European peleton (probably the upper 10%).

Just a thought.

At 205#, assuming a decent (but not great aero position), that translates to just over 27mph. So, figure on about a 4:10 bike split…nice ride.

Scott

I agree IM may be the wrong sport for you. So what was your IM bike time…?

You are either a liar or there’s somethings wrong with your powermeter.

I say what everybody is thinking.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the 710s just plainly suck. I had one & kept it on when I put on a Powertap Pro. In 2-3 gears the output was similar, but aside from that the 710 was way, way off–like 100+ watts off. I had set it based on everything I could find on the internet, and as an ex wrench, I’m comfortable that it was installed correctly. Friends who have ridden with them report similar problems.

yep, I have a SRM pro system. I can say I am a decent biker (not uberbiker, just plain decent) I’m always in the best 20 bike-splits in Ironman, and in Wales 2002 the 1/2 Ironman I had the 2nd Bikesplit.

Now I haven’t raced yet with the meter, but I did a 1h very hard effort and I averaged 320W, for 40 km/u on a normal bike with no bars. The fact that I’m 170, so 35 less then he is , would be a great issue in the hills, but not on the flats. That was flat out.
