Price Check (Wrench Question)

What is a reasonable price to pay for a complete re-cable and general maintenance jobber? I am getting ready to start looking into having this done and need to know what is reasonable and also to prep the wife for the cost  P3C.

$15 cables and housings
$9-$12 six pack of beer
and about an hour of your time
.

if you have it done at a shop, they’ll generally charge about $50 for a tuneup, and then charge additional for the cables and housing. cables should be about $3 each and housing will range from $1 to $4 per foot (brake housing is cheaper than shift housing). occasionally i’ve seen shops that charge as much as $7/ft of cable housing. i immediately leave these shops.

I did all the cables on my wife’s bike. It is not that I can’t, I just don’t want to deal with it right now, too much going on at work and side projects. You throw training into the mix and something has to give! Aka I am going to let someone else do it this time

About $50 + materials.

Cables, tuneup, lube.

Where you getting cable and housing for $15?

Around here housing is about $2/ft and cable are $4 for stainless and about $7 for teflon.

Anyway, I don’t replace housing every time I replace cables as it is usually in good shape. Also, you can save a bit but cutting a piece out of the middle of long sections to replace short sections since usually it is only the ends that get buggered up or corroded.

Oops, that was for brakes only. Add another $20 for the gear set.

Have you tried the PBK cables? If so, what did you think?

(I need to recable my road bike again. It has 6 year-old Shimano 105 components, so as long as their cables work reasonably well, that price looks pretty tempting).

I put a set on my road bike about a month ago, have only rode it on the trainer but shifting has been problem free. They are nothing fancy but get the job done. Won’t know about durability until later. If you can do the work yourself, the most you will be out is a few bucks if you don’t like them. I have a second set I will be putting on my tri bike any day now.

If you have a reputable shop familiar with your P3, you can call ahead to get pricing. I just had my P3C done with a few other services, but it fell into the $44-$50 range for new cables and housing for the brakes, shifters (Visions) plus labor ($3/each parts, $8/each labor x 4). I also had the stem cut down, aerobars cut down, and new grip tape on the pursuit and aerobars. $92.00 total.
