I guess it depends on what you’re after. If it were me (and it was a few years back), I’d choose a sprint distance race, borrow a bike, and train each sport by myself. Make sure you can make the distances in each sport and try running off the bike a few times. Work on a plan for transitions and hang out on Slowtwitch to pick up a few tips on things like open water sighting. A sprint is manageable on minimal fitness, but will give you a good idea of what it feels like to race all three sports. If you like the sport after that, then you can go all OCD on training plans, coaching, gear, etc.

one thing that i can recommend after doing my first one this year, followed by 11 more, swim then swim some more and after you are done with that keep swimming. But besides that i didn’t train much… which you could tell if you looked at my run split and swim split.
